PATTI SMITH
76th Birthday Show - Brooklyn 2022 [no label, 2CD]

Live at the Brooklyn Steel, Brooklyn, NY; December 30, 2022. Very good audience recording.

Thanks to nulldogmas (neil d) for sharing the show at Dime.

nulldogmas noted:

Patti Smith’s annual birthday shows returned after a Covid hiatus, this time at the 1800-capacity Brooklyn Steel instead of Webster Hall, which holds 1500. Patti was in fine voice and an especially goofy mood (one long digression about socks gets its own track, and its own instrumental theme), there were some new covers, and the AT-853 cards did a good job of muting the boominess of the room.

A couple of notes: The crowd around me (on the riser at house left) was generally respectful, but twice people tried to push through the crowd to get to the front of the floor, and both times the woman to my right had to forcefully tell them that they were headed for a railing and needed to go a different way, which was loud enough even to be picked up by directional mics. (I’ve deleted a few seconds right after “Because the Night” where she and I both argued with one of these people, but didn’t want to remove any actual music.) And there’s a brief change in the sound for a few seconds in the middle of Lenny’s “Time” song medley where I shifted, though it’s less noticeable than I feared. Finally, the bangs audible toward the end of the show are from people popping the large balloons that were released from the ceiling during the singing of “Happy Birthday,” though Patti was apparently too distracted by Jesse presenting her with a cake to notice.

Enjoy, buy all of Patti’s records (and books), and I hope we’re all back next year for her 77th!

  6. I hope nobody ever gets to see the video that Derricks mom shot when a few of us went round her place. Despite her best efforts nobody could raise a smile. On the end we all just shit in U L E’s mouth and went home.

  7. As you probably know, there’s a Sci-Fi event in this town these days. Yes! No lies! However, since I know by-heart all B.O.C. lyrics for decades, I can only take this little cynicism with a smile…. Poor little paper tigers, they should have lived in Sainte-Colome for half-a-week in 1978…. Buck Dharma would have reduced them in ashes by just a move of his plectrum.

  8. Oooh and, by the way which is not all the way: Before rumours attain more inhuman proportions, I’d like to put things clear: Patti is no relative to Giles Smith and has never intended to get involved with him. Real poets are not bitches. Can you imagine Patti Smith recording a tribute to Adolf Hitler? It doesn’t make sense.

  9. Serge, I think this nonsense you have come out with is worse than the other comments on here. Stop eating your crayons and take your largactyl.

Oh and fanxt BigO for these great Patti gigs.

  11. Deary Swappers, if you had met and experienced some of the subhuman creatures living in this place like I did and fortunately stopped, you would eat more pens and pissing inks than you can imagine, something I do not do the do, then you would compare the complete works of M.Night Shyamalan to these people and think it’s kind and sweet, compared to them. at least, what you call my crayons meals and jokes avoid me to become a serial killer — What they really deserve!

  12. Bravo, Serge, Bravo….I applaud you for denouncing that Adderall chewing limey piece of shit whopper swapper. He is vermin and filth and we all wish the son of a bitch would dropdead of cancer

  13. I concur Lenny and Serge. whopper swapper needs to be put in a straight jacket and eat his own feces and drink his urine
