JACKSON BROWNE
Los Angeles 1990 [JEMS Archive, 1CD]
Christic Institute Benefit Concert. Live at the Shrine Auditorium, Los Angeles, CA; November 17, 1990. Very good mono soundboard.
Thanks to JEMS, BK and mjk5510 for sharing the show at Dime.
+ + + + +
The 1990 benefit concerts that brought Bruce Springsteen, Bonnie Raitt and Jackson Browne together in support of the Christic Institute are considered essential performances for Springsteen collectors. The famous bootleg CD set Springsteen, Raitt and Browne presented nice audience captures of all three artists’ sets from the first night and there are multiple audience recordings of both shows. Many years later, a soundboard recording of Springsteen’s performance on the second night surfaced and, two years ago, both of Springsteen’s complete sets were officially released as part of Bruce’s archival download series. But until now, no soundboard recordings of Bonnie Raitt or Jackson Browne sets have ever emerged.
How JEMS came into possession of complete, master soundboard DAT recordings of both nights will need to stay shrouded in a bit of mystery to protect our source, but if there is a lesson to be shared from the experience it is ALWAYS ask people in the industry if they ever recorded any concerts. You never know what they might be sitting on.
This is a direct transfer of the master DAT tape recorded off the board of Jackson’s second night set and it is an excellent mono capture. In time we will get to the first night and both of Bonnie’s performances.

+ + + + +
As soon as Bruce Springsteen was added to the lineup for the 1990 Christic Benefit shows both Jackson Browne and Bonnie Raitt had to have known he threatened to overwhelm everything about the benefit.
If anyone was going to go all in on the political aspects of the benefit it would likely be Jackson. Instead, with the minimal backing of percussionist Debra Dobkin and guitarist Scott Thurston, he gave an understated hour-long heartfelt performance.
Only occasionally being bombarded by an impatient audience with the cries of “Broooooce”, Jackson remained focused telling a few stories and keeping it light with a subtle sense of humour. I’m sure he knew if he delved to far into the political side of things he’d lose the already restless audience.
He performed a variety of his best known songs spanning his career as well as pulling out a closer that was still 3 years away from release. It’s a strong performance with many highlights and is a joy to hear his refreshing set in soundboard quality.
