San Francisco 1971 [no label, 1CD]

Live at KSAN Studio, San Francisco, March 1971. Very good FM broadcast.

Blues fans might be more used to listening to Taj Mahal in a group setting but it’s quite an eye-opener listening to him perform solo in the studio. Those who are familiar with the acoustic tracks on Giant Step/De Ole Folks At Home (1969) will have an idea of what to expect - Stagger Lee and Annie’s Lover from that album are played here. Performing may not be the right word - like a teacher, he moves from instrument to instrument giving the novice a feel of the sound; settles on a song; and then moves on. And it’s not all lowdown dirty blues. Both the Slide Guitar instrumental and Railroad Bill are joyous affairs.

This was shared by Doc Tinker on Dime back in 2007 and was reseeded recently by amellowsoul. Thanks to the Doc and amellowsoul. As the Doc commented: “It’s truly phantastic to listen to this incredible lecture in Blues, sung and played on various instruments! This is an exellent stereo recording with occassional slight interferences.”

Thanks also to Davies51 for the artwork, which was posted on the internet.

  4. Nice Recording. Thank you BIg O. Davies51, the glockenspiel instrumental is actually a kalimba. It’s an african instrument often called a “thumb piano”.
