“Collection of very good to excellent quality home demos and studio outtakes from 1970, released on a blue plastic platter in 2009. A number of these tracks can also be found on other bootlegs documenting the JL/POB sessions, but tracks A02-A06 are of special note as they have yet to be released on CD (as far as I can tell). They include the final takes of Love, a great rocking rendition of Hold On and a previously unheard jam on Glad All Over (different from the performance included in the familiar Oldies medley) that segues into take 23 of Hold On.”

The husband-and-wife team of John Lennon and Yoko Ono both recorded simultaneously at Abbey Road Studios and at Lennon’s home studio in Ascot for John’s Plastic Ono Band album and also for Yoko’s avant garde Plastic Ono Band album. Both albums used the same studios, same musicians, same production team and almost the same cover art [Yoko lies on John on her album and vice versa] and the same album title.

While John’s songwriting qualities for melody and lyrics never influenced Yoko’s Plastic Ono Band album, it does seem that she influenced John instead. The raw vocal style reflected anger and hurt, the minimalist writing nevertheless pushed his message forcefully and the louder volume showed John shifting away from Beatle pop, digging deeper to find his “primal self”. Of course, John was still John or else songs as beautiful as Love [two beautiful takes here] would not have been written. But even here, the lyrics had been stripped down to be haiku-like.

This first real solo album also neatly divided the themes in John’s writing - social and political commentary; the personal and private; his love and rock ‘n’ roll roots. No other solo album was as complete in showing the artist as Plastic Ono Band.

This was shared at the Hunger City site. Thanks to Beatcomber. The comments next to the tracks are his. Mother has been omitted as it sounds like the official version.
