Born Again [Social Graces 005, 1CD]

Live at The Palace, Auburn Hills, MI, November 13, 2009; Ullevi Stadium, Gothenburg, Sweden, June 22, 2003; Asbury Park Convention Hall, Asbury Park, NJ, March 23, 2009; Somerville Theater, Somerville, MA, February 19, 2002. Very good soundboard.

The highlight of this release is the complete Born To Run album performed live. But then again, any Bruce Springsteen live soundboard is already a highlight unto itself.

And long-time fans will be taken by Springsteen’s “introductory” spiel. [The E Street Band played 27 songs that night and Thunder Road was the sixth song.] Faltering at The River as he rattled off the “complete” albums played during the previous shows, Springsteen joked: “At least at 60 I can plead the onset of early Alzheimer’s.”

But on a more serious note, he continued: “This was probably our most important record. We put out two records and they hadn’t gone anywhere and we were close to being dropped by our record label and this record came along and it sort of, I guess, started a life-long conversation that I’ve had with you, and you’ve had with me. This was kind of a big introduction to one another where I asked a lot of the main questions I think I spent the past 30 or 35 years trying to find my way through.”

The performances here are great; the sound is great and, for completists, it’d be great too to have the entire show. Or at least, include as part of the bonus tracks, Bob Seeger’s Ramblin’ Gamblin’ Man, which the E Street Band premiered that night.

Thanks to Lincoln Park Mark for sharing the tracks.

  2. Thanks!- Was lucky enough to see Springsteen several times in the days before Born to Run, when he played small venues with only a few hundred people. He’s still a great artist, surrounded by wonderful musicians, but in those days, he hadn’t been spoiled by success.

  6. Yo Namoosedog-

Thanks for pointing out what a loser I am.

Damn, I wish I was still playing dirty smelly bars for gas money where most of the people there didn’t bother to listen to me and my band, or buy my records. Glory Days, indeed.

  7. If that comment is from Bruce, therefore indicating he knows these ROIO are here, I’d like to thank him for letting them remain on the site.
We haven’t seen Bruce in Australia for a long time and to hear these recent shows is great.

  10. Perhaps the Bruce Springsteen above is not the real one, but if you are, I can assure you, as one fan, that I purchase your recordings, the last two being “Devil’s and Dust” and the fabulous Hammersmith show 1975. I think most people can see right through the success jibe. The reality is that success comes from premier musicianship and a great rapport with fans
