Plays Nat King Cole en Espanol
Antwerp 2009 [no label, 2CD]

Live at the Jazz Middelheim, Antwerp, Belgium; August 16, 2009. Very good radio broadcast.

Grateful_c2d, who posted the tracks on Dime, said:
David Murray prepared a special project for Jazz Middelheim 2009 - ‘Nat King Cole en Español’, a tribute to the Spanish repertoire of Nat King Cole. It is always a risk to bring together three worlds on one stage: the roots of black tradition and jazz, the Cuban Jazz and the classical string section of the filharmonic. With beautiful arrangements, Murray succeeds in bringing to life the mood of the ’50s… A very festive closing act for Jazz Middelheim 2009.

According to a David Murray posting on Facebook:
The idea of the instrumental project - David Murray plays Nat King Cole en Espanol - is to re-orchestrate the original arrangements of the parts sung by Nat King Cole. While history tells us of the success of this album of Cole which particularity was an adaptation of the Hispanic culture, David Murray and his tentet undertook the initiative to adapt the work of Cole to their musical formation. The challenge of this new project is to replace the vocals of Cole with brass solos…

Indeed the orchestral arrangement will be composed of different instruments and based on brasses: trombones, trumpet and baritone saxophone. It will be an atypical orchestral structure in which the use of the toning down will be the trademark. Inspired by Ellington’s arrangements for a grand-orchestra, this type of orchestration will bring a kind of majesty to lighter songs such as El Bodeguero by adding a more jazzistic melody.

What’s probably needed is a bit of rum and it’s time to samba. As for the tracklist, Grateful_c2d noted: “Excuse my poor Spanish.” Thanks to Grateful_c2d for sharing the tracks.
