Archaeology - Lost Recording Sessions 1963-1968 [Picaresque Records]

Here are CD4 and CD5 from this bootleg boxset released in 2001. Excellent soundboard stereo/mono.

Time will not wait for me
Time is my destiny
Why change the part of me that has to be free
The love that passed me by
I found no reason why

But now each day is filled with the love
That very same love
That passed me by
And that is why

I can breakaway from that lonely life
And I can do what I wanna do
And breakaway from that empty life
And my world is new

(Breakaway by Brian Wilson)

The five-CD Archaeology box set, pressed on 24kt. Gold CDs, includes two collections, the two-CD “Lost Recording Sessions” and the three-CD “Lost Smile Sessions”. While many of the tracks had also been offered in the “Sea of Tunes” label’s “Unsurpassed Masters” series, some of them appear here in different mixes. - Philip Cohen

The songs, the songs. Brian Wilson was SUMMER. The endless SUMMER. Who could hang around him and not be humming “fun, fun, fun”? And “all summer long”? Wilson wrote the getaway songs for his generation. And you can dance to them.

This five-disc set was a better way to enjoy all the outtakes that had slipped out to collectors in the late ’90s. If you are anal, you might find pleasure in the mind-boggling 58-CD set put out by Sea Of Tunes with many tunes repeated, repeatedly. If you’re counting, we’re offering CDs 4 and 5.

We all need to forget. Forget unemployment. Forget mortgage woes. Blah, blah, blah. Just press up to track 17 on CD 5 and you’ll be on your way. Five takes, count ‘em, five of Breakaway. Mono Bob Dylan moaning about the times they are a-changin’? Not for this old man.

Thanks to Phil for sharing this gem of a bootleg. As far as we can tell, none has been officially released. A shame.
- The Little Chicken

Note: A longtime music fan, Philip Cohen was a contributor to the now-defunct ICE Magazine and compiled the boxsets for The Yardbirds, The Small Faces, Humble Pie and Nice.

  2. Thanks for this BigO and Phil. I was listening to Brian Wilson Reimagines Gershwin when this posted so I’m already in a Beach Boys mood. Maybe someday soon you’ll post the other 3 discs. Feels like summer already!

  3. Thanks to Phil and BigO for this offering. And I agree with Sking—hopefully there will be a chance to post the other three discs. Keep up the great job with all the wonderful music you supply to us on a consistent basis. It’s greatly appreciated!

  4. I am so ready for this! Thanks, guys!

  5. I agree completely with Phil. It is a shame that these Great Harmony Sessions so far remained unpublished. Years ago, the great SOUND PET sessions were officially released. Here one could hear the uniqueness of the group’s genius Brian Wilson. From the original SMILE - album so far 31-take-disc is known. Equally awesome.
I think the other 3 discs are required here at BigO. Greetings from Germany.

  18. I just remembered seeing video of when the Beach Boys toured in 1968 or not long after the “Eastern Block” country of Chechoslovakia was invaded by Russia and were still occupied by tanks and the like. The Beach Boys performed “Breakaway”. It brought a whole new meaning to the song, and how they got away with it, I don’t know. Anyone else remember that? Hungary in 1957 too, and the bloody pool in water polo in the Olympics. A lot of world history since then.
