San Francisco 1982 [no label, 1CD]

Keystone Korner, San Francisco Bay Area, December 1982. Very good soundboard.

As Christmas approaches, fans are wondering when DJ Bob Rivers will ever release his next album of Christmas song parodies. But then, one can’t blame the man for holding off his parodies. If anyone had heard Rivers’ Christmas tracks, they would know that Rivers works best when he is spoofing a recognisable artist - he could do a mean CCR, Billy Paul, Eminem, AC/DC, with or without the Chipmunks. And that’s the problem.

The current crop of singers may have the voice but they are not easily identifiable or recognisable. Which also means either a regurgitation of previous Christmas albums (think Elvis, Sinatra) or new Christmas albums which probably won’t stand the test of time. (Anyone ever figured why the Do-Re-Mi Children’s Choir Christmas album or the Jackson Five’s Christmas album are still so popular?) So far, only one new Christmas album this year seems to have a bit of leg. Which then makes one wonder if Washington DC’s Trouble Funk or Chuck Brown ever played any Christmas sets. Now, that would really bring the house down.

Which brings us to saxophonist Dexter Gordon, a jazzman who knows how to keep Christmas. Ideal for late-night listening, this is a great disc to chill out to when everyone’s gone to bed after returning from Midnight Mass and where you have some quiet time and the twinkling Christmas tree all to yourself.

Thanks to the person who shared this on the net back in 2005. The CD notes said: “Part of a box of tapes purchased at a flea market in the San Francisco Bay Area, thus giving rise to the designation of the ‘Bay Area Boots’ for this little treasure trove.”

Comments from the Source:
All of these recordings I’m currently transferring came from a local flea market discovery. This was perhaps 10 years ago (I’ve been slow in getting them organized and digitized). I was rummaging through a box at a local college flea market, and found a large bunch of cassette tapes at the bottom. There were some that were obviously copies of commercial releases, but also about a dozen that appeared to be boots, labeled with (leader) names and dates and, in a couple of cases, the location of the recording. I knew pretty quickly that these had all been recorded at clubs in the SF area between 1982 and 1985 (and one from 1988). There are about four tapes that I can identify as having been recorded at Kimball’s East in San Francisco. I have no way of knowing whether these are first generation tapes, or whether they were all from Kimball’s or other clubs as well. I think only one is identified as being a radio broadcast.

  5. Great playing, great sound! But the The Christmas Song seems to be most of track 3, while the Holiday Message Over White Christmas is at the beginning of track 5. Should track 4 be Blues then?
