London 2002 and Edinburgh 2009 [no label, 2CD]

Live at BBC Maida Vale studios, London, December 18, 2002; live at Usher Hall, Edinburgh, Scotland, November 28, 2009. Very good radio broadcasts.

Favourably compared to Love, The Smiths and even Nick Drake, the “wistful pop” of the Scottish Belle And Sebastian has won them a loyal following and initial albums such as Tigermilk, If You’re Feeling Sinister and The Boy With The Arab Strap helped to cement their indie reputation.

The 2002 Christmas show is as much a show for Belle And Sebastian as it is now in memory of John Peel, who died in October 2004. For those who had followed and miss Peel, this might bring a lump to your throat amidst the good cheer.

Thanks to auto_pilot for sharing this show at Dime. Auto_pilot noted: “If you’re looking for perfectly-played versions of B&S songs, this is not for you. If you’re after moments of… everyone involved sounding like they’re having a thoroughly great time, this is for you. I make no apologies for having left in some of the band’s interactions with John Peel, and a number of Peel’s comments at the end of songs, and Peel’s impression of a mating fox at the end.”

If nothing else, Belle And Sebastian’s covers of Santa Claus Go Straight To The Ghetto (James Brown) and Santa Bring My Baby Back To Me (Elvis) are already worth the price of admission. And Twelve Days Of Christmas is a real riot.

Thanks also to humberthumbert for sharing God Help The Girl on the net. God Help The Girl was a project by B&S’s Stuart Murdoch and this was a special concert celebrating the BBC’s A History of Scotland. Jackie Bird introduces God Help the Girl with the BBC SSO conducted by Robert Ziegler.

  3. B&S is one of those groups I rarely listen to, but always enjoy when I do. Guess I should play them more. Disc one was a good time holiday listen indeed. “12 Days of Christmas” reminds me of Bob and Doug Mckenzie. I love those effin’ hosers! Thanks for the post.
