Archaeology: Lost Smile Sessions [Picaresque, 3CD]

Good to very good soundboard stereo/mono.

The five-CD Archaeology box set, pressed on 24kt.Gold CDs, includes two collections, the two-CD “Lost Recording Sessions” and the three-CD “Lost Smile Sessions”. While many of the tracks had also been offered in the “Sea of Tunes” label’s “Unsurpassed Masters” series, some of them appear here in different mixes. - Philip Cohen

Here is a comment from
These three discs are devoted to Smile outtakes and, like most all other compilations of this nature, the selection and quality is all over the place, from “you-are-there” fidelity to “you are sitting in an adjescent building trying to listen over the sound of traffic” mud. The first disc is devoted to the sessions for “Heroes & Villains,” with vocal and tracking takes all in clear sound, including a strange studio “acting” take with Brian wanting to take some guy’s radishes, and being continuously rebuffed. The rest of the 33-track disc is just various snippets and bits which the listener may find interesting or not, depending on your level of fanaticism. The second disc is more problematic, with clips from “Child Is The Father Of The Man,” “The Elements,” “Cabinessence,” Vegetables” and other small bits, all in noticeably poorer sound (obviously copied from other bootlegs.) Disc Three is devoted mostly to ”Good Vibrations” sessions, again with varying sound, but with some improvements over past issues, and different takes.

While the above writer is coming from the perspective of a hardcore Beach Boys collector, for the rest of us mere mortals, a three-CD distillation of the Smile sessions is still handy while offering a fly-on-the-wall look at the creation of a classic record.

Thanks to Phil for sharing the tracks.

Note: A longtime music fan, Philip Cohen was a contributor to the now-defunct ICE Magazine and compiled the boxsets for The Yardbirds, The Small Faces, Humble Pie and Nice.

  7. after listening to the beach boys and their ‘finished’ album songs, it is TRULY refreshing to hear these studio sessions, as well as the ‘lost’ sessions you had just posted. these give you some great insight in the work and talent and inspiration that went in to the finished songs. and, some of these are better that the released versions.

  8. More proof if it were needed that Brian Wilson was unassailable in his prime.

  9. Thanks Phil for the sequel. Sessions are always a special experience. Especially with Brian “Beach Boy” Wilson. So extensive SMILE-session choice I have yet to be heard. There are other takes, I am aware of. Maybe you’ll see a lot from the great Beach Boys.
    Thank you and Merry Christmas.

  10. Even the Beach Boys “throwaway” stuff is great to hear!!!

You can find subtle differences that make trolling through the tons of takes to get some really killer vocal renditions all worth your time!!!
