Melbourne 1981 [no label, 2CD]

Live at the Festival Hall, Melbourne, Australia, February 22, 1981. Very good radio broadcast.

Fans who have heard this radio broadcast in the past tend to have fond memories of this gig from the Zenyatta tour. Of course, comments by Police manager Miles Copeland (elder brother of drummer Stewart), who taped the show, and by the rather candid band members all make this an enjoyable affair.

While Miles says the show is from March, it is likely that this is the Melbourne show which took place on February 22, 1981 [listen to announcer before Fall Out and Sting’s comments before So Lonely].

And as sweller29, who shared these tracks on the internet, noted: “I’ve had this one for almost 30 years… Being a bit of a drummer I’ve always loved this recording. Stewart Copeland’s playing is so %$# good, it’s unbelievable. (On the Synchronicity and the new tour he seemed like an animal that had been sedated.) This one is real ‘balls to the wall’ playing.”

  9. Is this the concert where they are singing the Muppet Show Theme prior backstage ? I think it’s Sting and Stewart doing most of the singing.

  10. Great for the fans in respect to sound quality. But, let’s face it, a lot of Sting’s lyrics are dreadfully repetitive. If you don’t mind singing the same phrase over and over, the Police is pretty good music.
