Le Zenith, Paris 2004 [no label, 2CD]

Live at Le Zenith, Paris, France; June 30, 2004. A very good stereo satellite broadcast.

Before wardrobe malfunction, Britney Spears and Lady Gaga, there was the contender.

Uh Huh Her was PJ Harvey’s sixth album with yet another change in style. A lo-fi affair, self-produced, self-composed and self-played except for the drums, yet Uh Huh Her didn’t quite make any chart shake. Already a critics’ fave, Harvey just never quite delivered the stuff to become a crossover wonder. It would take Lady Gaga to do that.

If you listen to this incredible live show at the Zenith, you can see some of the reasons for her failure to sell albums by the trailer load. In many ways, Harvey is to punk in the ’90s what Patti Smith was to punk in the ’70s. Both shared an insouciance to authority, were fiercely feminists and traded in art not celebrity-hood. While they might have wanted to be rich and famous only the latter path was open.

This unique show paired her with ’60s legend Marianne Faithfull fronting brand new songs. Mostly the show was an opportunity to test Harvey’s new songs from Uh Huh Her and from the previous album Stories From The City, Stories From The Sea. Harvey toured for seven months and offered herself for scrutiny in the pop press but the songs on Uh Huh Her, described as personal and “tender”, never oozed pop hooks or offered memorable singles as this concert proves.

That’s where Rihanna, Lady Gaga and co stepped in.

With Let England Shake, PJ Harvey has changed direction again to offer not a European’s interpretation of the blues or another take on punk but a cool Britannia’s look at post-Empire Britain. So before you get serious and political with PJ Harvey, let’s get it on with this excellent show.

Thanks to NotaPrettyBoy for offering this at the legendary Sharing The Groove site back in 2004.

    Ignore the obnoxious troll.

  17. some ppl will go against me no matter what i say. if i said they werent working and u said they were.. theyd take your side. if u agreed with me theyd say i was wrong and u were right somehow. it isnt logical but this particular moron is exactly that type. he doesnt care if what he says makes any sense at all. the fact is the track worked fine. i tested it within mins of u posting that there was a problem and there wasnt one. now granted i have had a problem every now and then with a file offered and sometimes it only takes a refreshing of the page. other times it is the posted file itself. sometimes its a combination of the 2. in this particular case on this page however i am 100% positive every file worked since it was posted. and in all cases with the idiot above.. well watch what he comments about and do the math and see if im wrong. u will figure it out.

By darth on Jun 29, 2015

  18. u figure it out darth that you are an asshole.
    plain and simple.
