London 2011 [no label, 1CD]

Live at the Vortex, London, UK, January 18, 2011 and broadcast on BBC Jazz On 3, March 7, 2011. Ex webstream stereo. Complete broadcast but incomplete concert.

Still the little, little brother of jazz, free jazz seldom gets its chance to wail. But here’s a sort of “super group” with Ingrid Laubrock (20 years in the scene with about 10 albums under her belt) on sax, hot free jazz guitarist Mary Halvorson, Tim Berne’s drummer Tom Rainey, New York and Halvorson regular John Herbert on bass and guest pianist Liam Nobel. On stage in London, to showcase the new album, Anti-House, which has good reviews in UK magazines.

Chris May, editor of All About Jazz, wrote, “The grooves on Anti-House are more splintered, fleeting and occasional, and move towards the abstract more readily, than in 2004, but they provide similarly engaging departure points for Laubrock’s off-planet explorations. Slowfish Glowfish, Quick Draw, Anti-House, Betterboon and Tom Can’t Sleep each have both feet off the ground, but even as they spiral higher, they periodically return to riff-like beats and melodic motifs.

“Laubrock can drive a motor rhythm with fissile enthusiasm, honking and squealing like an old-time, bar-walking tenor player while keeping the direction out and future facing, and it’s great to hear her referencing that R&B-informed heat again.”

This concert had rhythm, fleeting and changing tempo, squiggles from Halvorson and Rainey’s passive and intrusive drum work. The band work a wide and varied range of tones from deep bass to ear-splitting highs. Laubrock has the chops of a master improv. If you had been there, you could bear witness to the drum and sax duets between Rainey and Laubrock. Tom Can’t Sleep is one such intimate and playful tune. Anti-House is the quintet with guest Liam Nobel on piano.

This show is the first date of their European Tour. The BBC did a great job recording this. Thanks to TomP for sharing on Dime. Artwork by fastone.
