Paris 2011 [no label, 2CD]

Live at La Cigale, Paris, France; April 4, 2011. Very good FM broadcast (mono).

On chart action alone, British pop star Adele’s second album, 21 (2011), is going great guns.

According to the wikipedia:

- After performing at the 2011 BRIT Awards, the album track “Someone Like You” reached No. 1 in the United Kingdom, while the album also remained at No. 1.

- “Someone Like You” held the No. 1 position for four consecutive weeks.

- The Official Charts Company announced that Adele is the first living artist to achieve the feat of two top five hits in both the Official Singles Chart and the Official Albums Chart simultaneously since The Beatles in 1964.

- 21 has spent 10 consecutive weeks at No. 1 in the UK, the longest ever by a female solo artist on the UK Album Chart, surpassing Madonna’s nine weeks at No. 1 back in 1990 with her greatest hits compilation, The Immaculate Collection.

- In the US the album has spent a total of three weeks at the top of the Billboard 200 to date.

- The album has also broken the record for the most UK digital downloads.

According to Billboard, 21 expanded on the delicate folk-soul sound of the debut album, 19, with headstrong forays into fiery disco-gospel, stomping blues and ’70s-styled R&B. Adele’s manager, Jonathan Dickins, said: “The key to great singers is believing every single word they sing. And I think you believe every word that comes out of Adele’s mouth. People feel like they can relate to her because she’s relatable.”

PR talk aside, Adele, who comes from Tottenham, North London, is a fresh singer with a loud voice. On the quiet moments, especially with the piano backing her, she comes across like a rising Tori Amos, and with more oomph. Adele might have the last word (for now) when she told Billboard: “I love it when a wife drags her husband to a show and he’s standing there like a lemon. You spend the whole night trying to win him over and, by the end, he’s kissing his wife. That’s amazing.”

For those wondering what’s the buzz is about, this French radio show might just be what you’re looking for. Adele is entertaining, polished and with loads of talents to spare. And she practically performs the 21 album in full.

  2. Excellent! Thank you.

  3. Never heard of her before. A lot like our dear beloved Amy W. Not as range-worthy, but very similar. Could this be a trend?

  4. I wondered what the fuss was about. Now I know.

She is all over the media in the UK, including the Financial Times! She is no Amy Winehouse, thank god, but there are times when she reminds me of Grace Slick. And that can’t be bad.

  5. honest opinion, she aint as great as sales suggest. Shes more acceptable/relateable than say gaga. Too soppy and depressing for me. Get over ur man troubles adele and dont share it with me or bring me down! I live in the uk and im not swallowed up in the hype. Only downloaded this coz its a bootleg and with everyone jumping on the bandwagon, i thought id get it since i dont like her enough to buy her albums. Yes there is a trend wino/adele/duffy. As a brit, give me florence, lilly allen, nerina pallot or imelda may over them everytime. Plus she had a leg up from ridiculous awards(brit newcomer) so its not like she bust a gut to get the recognition so many better singers/songwriters crave for.

  6. Thanks again for a new current show. I also want to thank Philip Cohen for sharing his archives. I loved ICE magazine and still miss it. I go back to read them often. Still nothing on the market that can touch it.

  7. Freaking amazing! Perfect antidote to the sterile female pop of Lady Gaga and Katy Perry, both Madonna-wannabes. Adele has her own style and a voice that could melt glaciers!

  8. Stupid radio DJ babbling into the music! But her Dylan-cover (Make You Feel My Love) is really not bad.

  9. caljam, I dont know Lady Gaga’s background. But Katy Hudson Perry Brand I do. I video taped her 06/19/99 6 song performance, that got her first recording contract and CD released on Redhill (Pamplin Music) in 2001. Even though she got a lot of attention in the print media, her CD failed to hit due to Nashville’s meddling with her sound. She wrote her own lyrics, but they mangled it. When she was a little girl, she yearned for the camera, jealous of her older sister’s brief success. The lack of sales hurt her hard. She is determined to be #1, no matter what, and rejected her God. Once her comet has hit her peak, her fall likely will be worse than many. Her hopes lie only in this life and other’s adulation - always so fleeting. And her new husband is NO T-Bone Burnette!

  10. Big Thanks!

  11. Thank god for this . Beyonce doesn’t even come close to Adele. When you take someone like Adele and compare her to say B. Spears or Beyonce you realize how overrated those two fools really are .

  12. Thanks for the effort, love this girls voice, nowhere to buy legally live stuff

  13. I’m shocked to discover that there are people who fail to flip at the sound of this singer. I have yet to meet anyone who does not resonate to this girl’s passionate naked genius. She’s a phenomenon, like a strike of lightning in the dark. I feel privileged to have inhabited a time when she occurred.

  14. Great stuff. A female singer who can actually sing, not a platic pop tart who squawks inane noises via a studio auto-tune.

  15. One of the best boots I’ve got off this site. Recommended.

  16. I’m intrigued by this still being available and if so grab it while you can folks. I shared this around the time Big O first broadcast its availability and it got taken down and got me threatened by email really fast so enjoy it while you can! Hopefully it was a UK thing and the Big O boys are safe over there to share it again. As Big Dave says it is one of the best and really worthwhile sharing again here. Whilst Adele has gone awful quiet these days we await any new material with baited breath. Maybe that accounts for it not being so popular with some. I for one as oilygarage says find her voice hauntingly beautiful, strong and passionate with a depth that is quite quite unique. Her voice and accent when interviewed and her forthright attitude is uniquely personal too and worth following. She is a true new 21stC diva and no mistake
