Austin 2011 [no label, 1CD]

Live at Antone’s, Austin, TX; March 17, 2011. Very good soundboard.

On March 17, 2011, just about a month before the release of Hard Bargain, Emmylou Harris previewed her new album at the Americana Music Showcase in Austin.

In a separate interview with Jesse Kornbluth, editor of HeadButler.com, Harris gave her take on country music: “I’m nowhere with country music. I don’t hear much of it, so I shouldn’t venture an opinion, but when it finds me, it seems formulaic. I don’t hear anyone who moves me like George Jones or Bill Monroe. The country that you hear on the radio, it feels poppy but without the originality of pop… Country taught me how to sing, it put me on a path. But I was never going to be locked into a formula. I don’t want to be considered a current country artist.”

Or we can just call this Americana Music.

  3. Emmylou started out playing the bar scene in metropolitan Washington, DC - Saw her a couple of years ago playing bluegrass with the Seldom Scene. That’s the “Country” music she learned to sing. Good stuff. Thanks, bigO!

  4. I have just be fortunate to listen to this premiere of Emmylou Harris’s new album ‘ Hard Bargain’ which she recorded at Antonio’s in Austin on 17 March (St.Patrick’s Day). The 12 songs sung and the between song banter are excellent. Some songs of course I like a bit more than others, and my favourite is the tribute song Emmylou wrote to her late friend Kate McGarrigle, entitled ‘ Darlin’ Kate’. I won’t name any other tracks but just say I really enjoyed the concert and wish I could have been there. My one query though is that track 13 on the album ‘ Cross Yourself’ wasn’t sung at this premiere, and I am wondering what threason for this omission is, if anyone can tell me, Emmy ? I think I am going to enjoy listening to these songs sung live more so than on the studio album and I hope Emmylou comes to the UK to promote the album as I will be there in the front stalls. Highly recommended.
