Wisconsin 1979

Live at the Dane County Coliseum, Madison, Wisconsin; November 11, 1979. Very good soundboard.
HR (HUMAN RIGHTS)
Washington 2011 [no label, 2CD]

Live at the 9:30 Club, Washington DC; January 8, 2011. Very good soundboard.

May 11 this year will be the 30th anniversary of Bob Marley’s passing. To mark the occasion, here is a set from 1979 (with horn section). Thanks to hooligan3244 and Viewmaster for sharing the tracks on Dime.

The Bob Marley/reggae legacy continues as we also take this opportunity to feature HR (Human Rights) of the Big Brains Group and, for those with a longer memory, Bad Brains. Mixing hardcore punk and reggae back in 1977, Bad Brains were a major influence on later groups such as Living Colour, the Beastie Boys, Rage Against The Machine and Red Hot Chili Peppers. Rocking out about spiritual love on one hand and hitting out and commenting on the state of social decay on the other, Bad Brains cut across social lines in their lyrics and the group’s brand of melodic hardcore, plus reggae gave them an exciting edge that helped to make Washington DC the thinking man’s rock centre which later saw bands like Fugazi and Minor Treat (later the Henry Rollins Band) coming to the fore.

For HR (and this 2011 gig), there is more reggae than hardcore but when the shredding guitar comes, it’s like a breath of fresh air. And their Beatles covers can be quite startling. Thanks to RaverOnARoll for sharing the tracks on Dime.

As a bonus, we’ve added Right Brigade from HR’s December 2010 Pittsburgh show. It’s a reggae remix of a Bad Brains track. Thanks to digitallive for sharing the set on Dime. As digitallive noted: “If you are expecting HR from CBGBs ‘82 doing backflips and screaming like a maniac, this isn’t it.”
