Boston 2005 [no label, 1CD]

Live in Boston, September 16, 2005. Excellent radio broadcast.

By any recording artist’s standards, the first half of the ’70s were great years for Elton John. From April 1970 to May 1975, his albums included Tumbleweed Connection, Madman Across The Water, Honky Chateau, Don’t Shoot Me I’m Only The Piano Player, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, Caribou and culminating in Captain Fantastic And The Brown Dirt Cowboy (arguably the best work from the Elton John-Bernie Taupin partnership).

For the 30th anniversary of Captain Fantastic, Elton John and his band performed the album (minus Tower Of Babel and Writing) in a series of sold-out concerts in Boston, New York and Atlanta. According to the wikipedia, these “Captain Fantastic Concerts” were a part of the Peachtree Road Tour and were the longest concerts in Elton’s career, lasting nearly three and a half hours. The songs from Captain Fantastic were aired by Capital Gold Radio in a broadcast taken from the September 16, 2005 performance in Boston.

The live tracks are pretty close to those found on the released album, though there are some embellishments, for example, there is more jamming at the end of Someone Saved My Life Tonight. While Elton’s vocals aren’t as strong as before (yes, it’s been 30 years), he manages to hold the fort and for anyone who cherishes the album, this is still a great trip down memory lane.

These tracks are no longer available for sharing.1. Captain Fantastic And The Brown Dirt Cowboy

  7. I was at this show - and it was 3 and 1/2 hours long. Elton told us the structure early on - 1)New Peachtree songs, 2)Capt. Fantastic songs, and 3)Jukebox Time. Outstanding!
