BOB DYLAN
San Antonio 1976 [no label, 1CD]

Live at the Municipal Auditorium, San Antonio, Texas; May 11, 1976. Very good soundboard.

Often regarded as one of the better shows on the 1976 leg of Rolling Thunder, this is to celebrate Bob Dylan’s 70th birthday on May 24, 2011. Thanks to brianfair who shared the tracks on the internet in 2007.

Some notes from brianfair on the tracks:

Very interesting versions of these (mostly ‘74-’76) cuts. I prefer the “Shelter” here to the one on “Hard Rain” because it’s slowed down here and more in keeping with the spirit of the original (and more fitting for the song’s content, too.) I also like “Durango” here - it’s halfway between the slow desert crawl of the take on “Desire” and the much more exciting live version on “Biograph.” Here, it crawls in the verses and lunges forward in the choruses. Dylan changes some words in a verse, which is interesting. Other highlights: the sweet lil’ guitar solo during “You’re A Big Girl Now” and a speeded-up, almost jubilant “You’re Gonna Make Me Lonesome.”

Completeness: I can’t determine what the full setlist was for this show. One source claims the second set is missing, which would include Blowin’ In The Wind, Railroad Boy, Deportee, I Pity The Poor Immigrant; it also says “I Want You” was played after “Romance” and that there was an encore of “Gotta Travel On.” I’d have to guess that they are probably right. Also, a few songs are faded out near their conclusions. “You’re Gonna Make Me Lonesome” fades out during a solo, but that could also have been the last few seconds of the song before an abrupt end (not uncommon.) The show is still a great listen.

  3. Great recording of the second best Bob tour ever! BTW, “Maggie’s Farm” has a dedication to “Augie” which I am guessing is the Great Augie Meyers of Sir Douglas Quintet fame and a long time resident of San Antonio. Could be songs on this disc were from SA, TX show.

  4. Went back into my archives and listened to a 2 disc set called “Tales of Thunder” from this same tour. Excellent sound and a superb collection of songs from along the tour stops.

  8. Marvellous collection to go alongside the other Rolling Thunder tour albums currently available.
Take care though folks, the songs are not in the same order as they are listed on the back cover, so will need slight rearrangement before you burn a CD.
Nevertheless many thanks for a great album

  9. Crazy to come on BigO this morning to check out the new uploads and to see my words of four years coming back to me from some random Dime post. Thanks for the re-up!

  10. I don’t care for Rolling Thunder Dylan as a rule, but this is quite nice, and the sound is decent. Thanks for the post.

  11. Just the fact that he does Going Going Gone makes it worth the DL!

  12. Hi. The first four missing songs were sung by Joan Baez, and the other by Bob.
I’ve heard about a complete bootleg but I have not yet found it.
To HH: that bootleg is a collection of three uncomplete performances.

  14. Hi ..stumbled upon this via a Random google for “Bob Dylan 1976″. This is one boot from the 76 tour that I ain’t seen before. Interesting performance and pretty good sound. Great to hear the different tempo Isis and such gems as “Spanish is the loving tongue”. Thanks for posting it all as good quality MP3. For those who love the rolling thunder era “Hold the Fort for What is Worth” and “Hold the Fort , Lock Up the Warehouse” are must-haves from the 1976 leg of the tour. Stunning performances. Especially Isis as it starts slow and then breaks into a fast tempo part way through. I love the unpredictability of Bob on this tour…songs get a different delivery based on how he felt on the day.
    Cheers
