BUFFALO SPRINGFIELD
Oakland 2011 [no label, 2CD]

Live at the Fox Theatre, Oakland, CA; June 1, 2011. Very good audience recording.

It was already a stellar night… with Buffalo Springfield, and then you have Gillian Welch and David Rawlings (click here) as your opening act.

David Fricke of Rolling Stone magazine blogged:

There was also nerve.

After a 14-song set that veered from ‘Hot Dusty Roads’ and ‘Everybody’s Wrong,’ a pair of gritty Stills numbers from deep inside the 1966 debut LP, Buffalo Springfield, to Furay’s great lost ballad ‘Sad Memory’ from 1967’s Buffalo Springfield Again, Young opened the encore by leading the group through ‘Broken Arrow,’ his epic frontier daydream at the end of Again. A complex studio creation, it was recorded by Young as a solo piece, with session men, and never performed live in the Springfield’s first lifetime. Tonight, the song featured Stills at the piano, Furay flying next to Young in the chorus harmonies and its original honky-tonk country coda.

Thanks to easyed for recording the show and sharing the tracks at thetradersden.

Lineage:
stealth audience recording by Easy Ed from 23rd row far right*
Beyerdynamic CK930 microphones > Naiant Littlebox (phantom power supply and preamp) > Sony PCM-M10 (24 bit, 44.1kHz)

transfer: USB copy .wav files to PC, Sound Forge 10 Pro (set track markers, convert to 16 bit [iZotope MBIT+ basic2 psych9 1 bit dither],export to .wav files) > Trader’s Little Helper (level 8 encoding) > flacs, ffp, md5 files

*tracks 8 and 9 recorded from 6th row right aisle - I went up to that better spot but only lasted two songs before the ushers made me go back to my seat. Tried again before the encores, but got caught immediately and made to go back to my seat.

I couldn’t get a seat in the spot I would have liked. If I’d been able to record the whole show from the spot I recorded tracks 8 and 9 it would have come out a lot better.

  4. Hi,
    Thanks for posting this one.

By JR on Jun 4, 2011

  5. This is okay, what I would call a good to very good audience recording, better than the old live recordings from the 60’s that I’ve found, but I remember the concert recording BigO had from Oct 2010 from Mountain View. To call both recordings very good audience recordings, as if they were comparable, is somewhat a disservice to the quality of the Mountain View recording, whose vocals and instruments were upfront, and not lost in the distance.

Still, I appreciate the additional 5 songs that were not on the Oct. 2010 set: Hot Dusty Roads, My Kind of Love, Everybody’s Wrong, Sad Memory, and Broken Arrow.

    Thank you very much.

  8. hey bigo, thanks! i liked the mountain view bridge school show you posted last oct so i’m working on this now. i just got disc one. i’ll fix the tags and come back and get disc 2.

according to their official site, it’s fox theater not theatre.

  9. Ha ha, Ed. Uh, they come at it from the King’s English. It’s us U.S.A.’ers who changed it for our use. We also don’t say: lift for elevator, lorry for truck, centre for center, etc. I’m quite happy letting them saying it their way. I often use their spelling for fun on my liner notes.

    By 3yrsnojob on Jun 4, 2011

  10. yeah 3yrsnojob, i like to be accurate so i put what the official site says. much like on the sabbath boot. it’s spelled wrong so i fixed it. like here in b’ham, al we have a venue called alabama theatre. i saw tom waits there 7.3.08. it was great. i found it two years ago. bigo offered atlanta 7.5, and i have it too. in atlanta where waits played it is fox theatre. that is the correct spelling.

best to you. start listening to mary halvorson. her music is the tops! we are friends. next time she comes to your town, go see her play and mention my name. she will smile.

    thanks,
    ed

  11. hey 3yrsnojob, start here with mary. bigo has offered more of her shows and braxton shows she is on, but this is a good starting point. i got this almost a year ago now. i get all her shows i see. i have a couple that aren’t in circulation that tapers and musicians who have played with her have given me.

i’ve been enjoying tom rainey 3-pool school. mary plays guitar on it. it’s a good one.

  12. I could be wrong but this sounds better than any CSNY recordings I’ve heard, especially without Crosby’s stupid comments and flat vocals. This band is tighter and the vocals are better. Maybe its because Buffalo Springfield lives up to its reputation as a great live band, even without Dewey and Bruce.

  17. The October 2010 Bridge School show was recorded by other people with superior mics (Neumann KM140s or Schoeps) than I used for my recording of that show (I used DPA 4061 omnis).

This June 1, 2011 recording would have been much better if I had been in a better location.

Listen to tracks 8 and 9 to hear what this sounded like from the ideal recording seat.

  19. Thanks for this post. We just saw them here in Santa Barbara, Ca. On Tue. Great show. Sound was awesome. I don’t think they sounded that good in the old days. Full house. Played two nights. I never thought I would get to hear those songs live. Broken arrow and Clancy were exceptional. Young ran the show. Richie sounded great. They finished with Rockin in the Free World. No Messina or Crosby. Locals.
    Love you guys.

  20. My son is in the sea of humanity at Bonnaroo this weekend. The Springfield hits the fest at 9:30pm EDT Saturday night, right after the Black Keys. I had him download the Bridge School show as a warm up. He loved it and he has been playing it on his iBoomBox at the camp site for everyone to hear. Trying to talk him into going to see Dr. John with the original Meters and Allan Toussaint instead of Eminem after the Springfield. Neil Young he knew. The New Orleans masters, not so much!

  28. Hi. Easy Ed here, the guy who made this recording. May I ask, please, that the wonderful cd covers created become more wonderful by including credit to Easy Ed for making the recording, and better still, by detailing the lineage (mics, recorder, transfer equip, etc.)
