BBC In Session [no label, 1CD]

Live session for BBC Radio 3 FM “World on 3″. Broadcast April 22, 2011. Ex FM stereo.

We previously shared a full album preview of Hard Bargain at the link below. Here is something different, just four songs from that album but with the bonus of an insightful interview with Ms Harris conducted by the BBC’s Mary Ann Kennedy.

All the songs are live in the studio takes. Home Sweet Home, we learn is about the homeless neglected in America. Emmett Till is the retelling of the tragic death of a black boy who was killed for flirting with a white woman. He was only 14 and the incident shocked all Americans. Darling Kate is about her friend the late Kate McGarrigle. The surprise is a song about her friendship with the late Gram Parsons, The Road. She talks quite a bit about this song as she does about Home Sweet Home. Here are the first two verses off The Road, Harris’ farewell to Gram.

I can still remember every song you played
Long ago when we were younger and we’d rock the night away
How could I see your future then where you would not grow old
With such a fire in our belly such a hunger in our souls.

I guess I probably loved you and those words rolled off your tongue
Seemed that we were trailing under some unlucky sun
And though I couldn’t save you and no one was to blame
But the road we shared together once will never be the same

It’s well worth a listen. Many thanks to UncleBoko for sharing at Dime.
