BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN AND THE E STREET BAND
2009 Tour Rehearsals [Social Graces 008/009/010/011, 4CD]

Disc 1 and 2 - Closed rehearsals; Convention Hall, Asbury Park, NJ; March 18, 2009. Disc 3 and 4 - Open rehearsals; Convention Hall, Asbury Park, NJ; March 23, 2009. Excellent soundboard.

Dave Marsh, in his Clarence Clemons tribute/obituary, In The Land Of Hope And Dreams, wrote:

Bruce Springsteen and Clarence Clemons persevered, continually sending out their message over Radio Nowhere in case somebody, somewhere even might be listening. The real miracle is not that Bruce Springsteen was capable of finding so many variants of this theme, from the stage show itself to anthems like “Land of Hope and Dreams” and “American Skin (41 Shots),” and allusions peppered through his other songs. (How dumb would you have to be not to understand that this is one implication of, to choose the most obvious for instance, “Darkness on the Edge of Town”?)

No miracle there - Springsteen set out to write about the heart of the country, and race was central to what he found there. In order to do an honest job as honest as he could, he had no choice but to tell the truth about who shackled whom, who has the key and what that key consists of.

The miracle was that Clarence Clemons, for all his affectations and clowning, playing for the most part accents and fills, found a way to portray a character not of massive physical bulk only but as massively stalwart, courageous, and dignified as the black part of this nation has always been.

  4. Very interesting posting, not just for The Big Man, but for the glimpse of the Boss and Band at work. Saw “The River” show at MSG in November, 2009 and was impressed with how the band could update that great album in concert. PS - check out our neighbor, Nils Lofgren, on tour this summer. His solo show is amazing!

  6. Am delighted to be downloading all the Springsteen/Clemens stuff you have posted, BigO, despite the sad reason for the tributes.
There can’t be many sidemen who have been so identifiable and so fondly admired as the Big Man.

  7. @tony Yes, you’re right with the sidemen. Only a few are coming to my mind: my personal hero Lenny Kaye (Patti Smith), Mick Ronson (David Bowie & Ian Hunter) and another one from the E-Street Band, Miami Steve. I might find more, but then I have to think a while.
The strange thing with all these sidemen (you can also count Nils Lofgren w/Bruce and Neil Young) is, that their solo records were, to say it politely, not quite as good as the stuff they made as sideman. In fact, some of the solo stuff is real crap.
