MEGADETH
Unplugged In Buenos Aires 1997 [Giorgia, 1CD]

Live at the Centro Cultural Recoleta, Buenos Aires, Argentina; December 11, 1997. Excellent SBD stereo.

Dave Mustaine, co-founder of Medadeth, seems to have a thing for acoustic. There are recordings titled Unplugged in Montreal 2001, Unplugged in Philly 2005 and Unplugged in Boston 2006. Whether these are official fan club releases or not remains uncertain. But the first time Megadeth unplugged was in Buenos Aires, Argentina, 14 years ago.

We found this quote attributed to Mustaine: “(P)laying acoustic is like having sex with your clothes on, you know how to do it, but it’s hard”. Huh? Mustaine, thrown out of Metallica for having a drug and drink problem, deep? Well maybe.

But forgive him once you’ve heard the final three tracks at this show - Anarchy In The UK, Symphony Of Destruction and a cover of My Sweet Lord. You know Mustaine has a soft spot for soft rock. Megadeth together with Metallica, Slayer and Anthrax were the mainstays of thrash metal but of all the great thrash metallers, they harmonise the most. You’d think Mustaine wants to be the Everly Brothers of the metal set.

Then in 2002, Mustaine became a Born Again Christian. Looks like he really has unplugged himself from the devil’s music. By the way, two members of Slayer are also born-again Cs.

  2. hey bigo, looking at the setlist this is a maybe, if i can’t find anything else better. i really lost interest with megadeth, after rust in peace. i saw them 4x, back in the day. twice on rust in peace and twice on so far, so good, so what. they got way too commercial for me. then i liked united abominations and endgame. man, they really ruled back in the day, though. i still have a poster hanging up in my garage with gar and chris poland on it. that’s rare. they played on the first two albums. gar died years ago. he was good.

  3. Ed, you’re a trip. I like reading your commentS almost as much as I like the great music that is posted here.
I hope that you’re having a great summer.

By Henry See on Jul 7, 2011

  4. right on, henry. thrash ’til death! i wish we could get the big 4 tour here or atlanta. for those that aren’t familiar, there is a dvd of the bulgaria show. it’s metallica, anthrax, megadeth and slayer. i’ve seen all those bands multiple times and when all those bands really ruled. you waited for those bands to put out new albums cause you knew it would rule. i bought them the day they came out too.

summer is good so far, but it’s very hot and humid here in b’ham, al. i’ve lived here 33 years now, and i still haven’t gotten used to it. i like south pasadena, ca weather. i lived there from 1980-1982.

  6. What a pleasure for my ears to discover some of these great musical time capsules.

By Bonkie on Jul 7, 2011

  7. yeah, he did, phil. i like kick the chair, and that’s about it. he’s on it. there was one more song called back in the day i liked, but to me that album falls flat just like the ones that came out in the 90’s after rust in peace. there were a couple good songs on the world needs a hero, and mutaine even ripped off diamond head on the track when. it should have been called am i evil?. metallica called it that when they covered it as a b-day on creeping death. i’m only bringing that up cause dave made a big stink about metallica ripping off excel-tapping the emotional void. that is where the riff for enter sandman came from. excel are one of my alltime favorite thrash/crossover bands from venice and crumbsuckers from nyc. anyway, vinny from zappa-joe’s garage and one of the jeff beck shows that was offered here plays drums on the system has failed. as i recall, chris and dave ellefson had a falling out with mustaine over royalties or something. it was all over blabbermouth.

chris poland did a cool album called return to metalapolis. check the cut out and or used bins, phil. he also plays on lamb of god-ashes of the wake and so does alex skolnick of testament fame. i like chris’ band called ohm. check them out. i have a dvd.

  8. i just woke up but b-side and tapping into the emotional void. sorry.

  9. hey phil, go through your metal bootlegs. i am looking for rips of metallica-assassin, felt forum, nyc, ny 12.1.86. i saw a link for it, but it’s dead. your rips will definitely sound better. my brother has it on vinyl. he bought it at a record show in 87 for $15. man, it rules. newsted was just in the band for maybe two months, even though there’s a picture of metallica with cliff on back. he definitely isn’t on felt forum. he died on 9.27.86. i found better rips of 9.26.86 solnahallen, stockholm.

    best to you phil,

  10. hey bigo, i have a picture of me wearing a ramones shirt standing in front of the megadeth poster in question. i will e-mail it, and you can post it on here. garade days metallica-re-revisted is above it. the original garage was the creeping death b-sides of am i evil? by diamond head and blitzkrieg by blitzkrieg. both were nwobhm bands much like maiden, motorhead and the most excellent holocaust!!! my brother has it on white vinyl framed going down to his game room and garage.

  12. I’m no thrash-metal fan, but I’d like to highly recommend the “Metallica: Some Kind of Monster” documentary, which I wouldn’t have seen, except as research for a class. Not at all what you’d expect it to be… sort of a thrash-metal version of Let it Be and Spinal Tap. Wonderful!

By lowendbill on Jul 7, 2011

  13. Yep, Ed, you are handsome! I’d go out with ya, though I don’t know if we’re even in the same time zone. LOL ;-)

By Motorvilleboy on Jul 8, 2011

  14. Thanks, Ed. I’ll check that stuff out! Do you like Chris Poland’s Damn the Machine?

By Phil Brickey on Jul 8, 2011

  15. thanks mototvilleboy! we’ll make something work.

i haven’t listened to damn the machine, phil, if you can believe it. i’m sure i’d like it, though.

have you listened to alex skolnick trio? they’re good and jazzy. it’s not really like what mary halvorson plays, but i have a signed sampler disc my brother got for me last year in miami, fl when he saw them with rodrigo y gabriella. my brother met alex and talked to him. if you paid the $5 for the sampler, he would sign it or anything you gave him. my brother asked him about vio-lence and testament aug 1988 here in b’ham, al at dr jeklys that we were at. man, that show was the best thrash show i’ve ever been to. i was 16 years old, and it was like what you would see in the get thrashed documentary. everybody was thrashing, moshing and stagediving in this whole in the wall club on morris ave. it was definitely the loudest show i’ve ever been to too. my ears rang for ten days. eversince then i wear earplugs at shows. voivod was supposed to play, but canceled the whole tour cause piggy got sick with cancer then later died in 2005. he was great and had his own style of guitar playing. i’m a big voivod fan. do check out dimension hatross. it’s my favorite and their best!

  16. oh yeah, alex said he vaguely remembers the dr jekyls show. i remember standing outside waiting to get in and alex walked right by me. i was nervous so i didn’t say anything, but now i wish i did.

not many people can say they saw vio-lence, unless you lived in the bay area when thrash was really big. eternal nightmare is one of the best thrash albums of all time!

By Ed Saad on Jul 8, 2011

  17. Hey Ed,
Damn the Machine is definitely different than what he did in Megadeth. My brother loves Vio-lence Eternal Nightmare. We were just talking about it last week. I haven’t heard the Alex Skolnick Trio. Love Testament and Voivod. I agree with you on Dimension Hatross being their best.

By Phil Brickey on Jul 8, 2011

  18. hey phil, i will look for you on facebook. if you know about vio-lence, testament and voivod, you must be cool. nobody here in b’ham, al does. i’m one of the few real thrashers left from the old school days.

get on youtube and do a search for excel-my thoughts and crumbsuckers-trapped. watch both live clips. they were the best and d.r.i.!!!

i have a few voivod shows. i’d be more than happy to give you the site they are on, if you’re interested. i like demos too. i have a bunch. i have 3 vio-lence demos. robb flynn is on mechanic demo 1988. it’s the best one. i can give you all 3 of those too.

  19. hey phil 2, i’m such a crumbsuckers fan that i have demos 83, 85, new york avenue rehearsals, both albums and cbgb 1986. it’s the first show with chris singing and kirk hammett plays on hubrun. it rules. to be honest, most aren’t looking for this cool stuff. i love this stuff so i get it for my collection.

By Phil Brickey on Jul 9, 2011

  21. you’ll have to find me, phil. i don’t know which phil brickey you are. i looked this morning. there aren’t too many ed saad’s out there. sure, i’ll give you all that stuff. no problem.

i’d been looking for uncle slam-will work for food and when god dies for three years and i found both this week. life is good. not many probably remember them, but it’s more great thrash from back in the day.
