THE AMERICAN BEAUTY PROJECT
A Tribute to the Grateful Dead [no label, 2CD]

Live at the Orchestra Hall, Minneapolis, MN, June 17, 2011. A very good audience stereo recording. Turn up the volume and the bass.

“If you are interested in how Hunter-Garcia music sounds when it is sung in tune, give this a listen. The three women, and specially Catherine Russell, are excellent.”
- joxer6’s comment at SHNflac, the Losslesslegs site.

American Beauty Project are a collective of seasoned musicians dedicated to promote two 1970 Grateful Dead albums - Workingman’s Dead and American Beauty. Both albums moved away from the Dead’s legendary jams to offer softer, traditional folk, country and bluegrass tunes. A return to their roots.

The musicians here are amply qualified. Jim Lauderdale has worked for Carlene Carter and Dwight Yoakam and written hits for George Strait, the Dixie Chicks, Patty Loveless and others. David Mansfield is remembered as a member of Dylan’s Rolling Thunder Revue and composer of the soundtrack to Heaven’s Gate. Mansfield was guesting for founder member Larry Campbell. Aoife O’Donovan is from indie band Crooked Still and Catherine Russell is a blues/jazz singer and a regular backing vocalist for Steely Dan.

The rest of the project are the band Ollabelle which includes Fiona McBain, Byron Isaacs, Tony Leone and Glen Patscha. Members of Ollabelle are shared with The Levon Helm Band.

If you’ve ever wondered what the Dead’s lyricist Robert Hunter’s words sounded like unencumbered by the Dead’s loudness, then American Beauty Project is a good place to start.

Recorded and transferred by perks at Losslesslegs. A very big thank you. Now turn up that volume.

  2. Greetings Webmaster. Welcome back. Hope you enjoyed your holiday.

Thanks for this one. I hope it doesn’t get removed like The Orchestral Dead did a few years ago.

  4. Jim Lauderdale has just released his THIRD Cd collaboration with Robert Hunter, Reason & Rhyme, He’s got quite the Resume, far beyond what’s noted here, including critical work with Ralph Stanley and Donna The Buffalo. If you DON’T know him, this would be a great place to start; he has solo CDs going back to the early 90s.
David Mansfield also was a founding member of Bruce Hornsby’s band on his first two RCA LPs. H was a part of Arista Records’ band The Alpha BAnd (along with T-Bone Burnett & Stephen Soles, which did three very cool rare LPs post-Rolling Thunder Revue.
