Kojak Variety Rehearsals [no label, 1CD]

Live in Paris, late March 1995. A very good soundboard recording. Stereo.

“This disc consists of rehearsals conducted by EC, the Attractions, Marc Ribot, and James Burton in Paris in late March 1995 for the May 17, 1995 ‘world tour in a day’ intended to promote Kojak Variety. They rehearsed nearly the entire show in order. Only EC’s solo set, ‘I’ve Been Wrong Before’, and ‘Alison’ are missing.” - watercamp’s note, July 2011.

Kojak Variety Rehearsal Notes:
“This collection of tracks from the Kojak Variety Rehearsal came to me (thank you my friend) in flac format, they originate from cassette tapes, the equipment and software used for the transfer is unknown. It came with notes for each track that I have tried my best to verify and add to (thank you to the original researcher, excellent job).

“Should any of this information be incorrect please let me know by personal message.” - watercamp

Kojak Variety is a 1995 covers album by Elvis Costello. It was recorded at Blue Wave Studios in Barbados sometime in 1990 and then shelved till 1995. Costello always wanted this as his lost album and never intended it to be part of his main body of work. There is a relaxed, even lazy work ethic about Kojak Variety which is a big part of its charm.

This rehearsal of KV material then is an amazing snapshot of a band determined to let their hair down and have fun. Thanks to watercamp for sharing this at Demonoid. The sound has a couple of minor distractions, nothing fatal. Enjoy.

Kojak Variety was meant to be Elvis Costello’s “pin-ups”, at the time almost a given that every artist would make an album of his fave covers. Buy it here.

  4. Got the expanded 2CD edition as a gift. Bonus disc is very interesting collection of 19 additional song covers and a redo. Most are better left to collectors but there are a couple of gems. Worth seeking out if you are an EC fan.

  8. It would be great if the bonus disc, with better songs choices and better, looser performances by Elvis, were put back in print.

If anyone knows where it can be found for a reasonable price, or where the now out of print bonus tracks can be downloaded, I’d be grateful!
