SONIC YOUTH
Boston 2004 [no label, 2CD]

Live at the Avalon Ballroom, Boston, MA; August 14, 2004. Plus bonus track from Tonight Show. The Boston show is excellent soundboard.

Internet sharing has become so much a part of our lives that searching for new music is just a click away. There was a time when one had to go to specialty record stores to pick up any Sonic Youth albums and live SY shows were RARE or non-existent. [For those keeping score, the last full-fledged Sonic Youth album was 2009’s The Eternal. Since then, there is the Simon Werner a Disparu soundtrack and Thurston Moore’s recently released Demolished Thoughts.]

For anyone raised on classic rock, AM radio or even pop radio, Sonic Youth were revolutionary. (Guess that could be said for Patti Smith’s Horses.) The discordant guitar and the atonal tunings hit you like shredded glass and then there was always a catchy hook in the track.

By 2004’s Sonic Nurse, the songs may appear shorter but the group was still rocking away as before, so much so that some consider this gig among the top Sonic Youth shows from 2004. While the set featured tracks from Sonic Nurse, older tracks such as Mote, Sugar Kane, White Cross and Expressway To Yr Skull were a treat for the older fans.

By now if you are not into Sonic Youth, guess you never will… but one can only hope.

Thanks to the person who shared the tracks on the net in 2006.

this is the first show i’ve gotten since santana/mclaughlin. i like that one! i’ve been getting more great boc shows elsewhere.

  3. hey bigo, i definitely can use sonic youth-sloss furnaces, b’ham, al 7.12.09. i was there. it’s probably out there. i know there are good quality clips of it on youtube. it was a good show.

i saw white stripes there july 30, 2007. i believe, that date is correct. it was a monday night. it sold out. i definitely would pay some scalper $300 for a ticket. me and my brother just hung outside and listened for maybe three or four songs, and they lady at the ticket office said show her some money, if we want to get in. i told her i’m not paying face value for a show that has already started so we got in for $20 each. i can live with that. it was good, but it was so hot and humid. everybody was packed liked sardines too. i can use that show too. my brother found the video, but it’s not very great. as i recall, the video was better than the audio.

as i’ve said, you won’t read my postings anymore but on bigo.

    thanks,
    ed
