CARLOS SANTANA AND JOHN McLAUGHLIN
Invitation To Illumination
Montreux 2011 [no label, 2CD]

Live at the 45th Montreux Jazz Festival, Auditorium Stravinsky, Montreux, Switzerland; July 1, 2011. Good to very good audience recording.

In 1973, Carlos Santana and John McLaughlin recorded Love Devotion Surrender, which was inspired by the teachings of Sri Chinmoy and a tribute to John Coltrane. While the initial response was not overwhelming, over the years, the album’s stature has grown and it is now seen as a classic.

Thirty-eight years later, Santana and McLaughlin revisit some of the LDS tracks and, given the theme of the songs, one can see the place for Dylan’s A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fall and the inclusion of even Stairway To Heaven. Compared to the gigs in 1973, the gigs then sounded more intense - the Montreux show was more relaxed and probably more fun; guess by now there was no need for the two guitarists to make any (musical) statements.

Before playing The Creator Has A Master Plan, McLaughlin, 69, told the crowd: “Coltrane, Dylan, Led Zeppelin - we grew up with all of them. We’re gonna play a number now - a real favourite of mine…” and then repeated the song title like a mantra.

Earlier, Santana, 64, said: “John and I have a lot in common, we resonate spiritual feelings and resonate with having fun. It is not only Mother Teresa, Desmond Tutu and the Dalai Lama who get to have fun… Our highest purpose is to touch your heart… Miles Davis, Billie Holiday, Marvin Gaye and Dylan, we love all these people… and pay tribute and celebrate the supreme spirit of a great drummer, if not the greatest drummer in the world, Tony Williams.”

McLaughlin then added: “These [tunes] go back 150 years… It was a very special music that we played at that time… and Cindy (Blackman, Santana’s second wife) has taken Tony Williams’ tradition and pushed it further.”

Thanks to the person who taped the show and to HermanLR who shared the tracks on Dime. Cover art from rockrarecollectionfetish.blogspot.com, thanks.

  3. ed - rather than finding the shows u were at and then complaining that theyre not high enough quality for your tastes why not look for other shows from the same tours that were recorded either fm or tv brdcsts or sbd and be happy that u found what u could find even if they are not the exact show u were at as long as they are much more enjoyable to listen to? that u werent at the show doesnt matter. in the end it doesnt matter if u were there or not. make believe u were. its not as if u will be able to hear yourself in the audience.
there are some amazing dp 07s out there that u could get your hands on. and as for alice goes.. the same thing. there are other shows from the same tours that were recorded very nicely. god forbid they might be missing a song or two. take what u can get and be happy with it. if u get better later on fine. if u can upgrade later on fine. be grateful for what u get and be glad u can get what u can.
imagine if every zep show that ever came along was missing a song or two and u said u werent going to bother with them then suddenly u couldnt ever dl another one again because of what happened recently. u would be shit out of luck. now try to apply that with all the other bands u like. is this sinking in??

  4. hey darth, i just woke up. haven’t we had this conversation two months ago? i thought, i said if people don’t like what i post, don’t read it. yes, i wrote a whole page and two said they liked my comments. plenty of people like my posts, and they find me on facebook. i don’t remember complaining recently, darth. i remember others complaining about the quality of king crimson-santa monica 3.19.72, and i said it’s not bad quality considering the age of the show. i was one of the lucky ones who got it and kept it. not complaining here either. i just want that particular deep purple show cause i was there. i have several shows i was at in my library. their cool to have so you can relive the experience. if you have an alice or deep purple show from the their 2007 tours, upload them here and share them with us. i’ll get those too. i’ve got some drive space left. is that sinking in???

as far as zeppelin, i got almost every zeppelin show bigo offered here. i even lived with one earls court show missing one track. that’s all i care to have. more than one song missing i don’t care to have it. you can download that zeppelin show. i’ll pass on it or look elsewhere. i can still get zeppelin shows just not here so i’m not worried about it. they’re out there. i also remember somebody posting about the quality of zeppelin shows here not being very good. well that wasn’t me either. if you don’t like my tone, i don’t care for yours either. nor have i cursed in my whole posting or any of my postings.

that’s all i got, but this top is getting old. it’s like someone once said: take what you like, ed. i will and you do the same. this closes this top, i hope.

  5. hey bigo, i’m fasting so i’m about to eat breakfast, but i will play this walking and braxton 65th b-day show. speaking of braxton, nicole mitchell is a real nice lady. she’s on that show, and two weeks ago i got her cd called emerald hills from her in the mail. it only took seven months, but it’s good. check it out.

more mary shows!!! i got a recent show of hers from wfmu, jersey city, nj 7.22.11. it’s actually tomas fujiwara and the hook up trio. it’s good. it’s like her trio. i’ve met tomas when he was with the 13th assembly in tuscaloosa, al 12.2.10. it was a fun time. i have the show in my library.

  7. Hey, Bigo moderator:

Thanks for all that you do. Another monster show. Does anyone have the Sunday show that Santana/McLaughlin did with BBKing?

  8. ed & darth-
I kinda see both your points-I’m a completist to a point (if that makes sense, lol)! If i have missing tracks on an officially release i can always rip and add it to whatever bigo offers and thus fill in the blanks (if I have that official release) If not then I am content to hear whatever is offered and make do.The one good thing about the net is that one can almost always find anything with a little work and searching.

  9. right matt. on the particular earls court show i got, my brother has in my time of dying on the zeppelin dvd that was released several years ago. i have looked and the ones that have the boot posted have 192kbps rips, but the links are dead. their version is probably the bigo version cause it has the same exact artwork so it will just be one show i have that is missing a track. now on the stones-leeds anniversary show it’s not missing any live tracks just a studio track from metamorphis and my brother has it on lp so i don’t care. it was actually my lp, when i was a kid, but i gave him some of my lp’s when i got rid of my turntable years ago. i got a used turntable in xmas 04, but i don’t use it much. i use it sometimes to play some of rare johnny cash lp’s like any old wind that blows or the johnny cash show. those aren’t on disc. if i see a rare jazz lp in good shape at a flea market or used bookstore for a $1, i’ll buy it. i bought herbie hancock-quartet which is a double lp on columbia and has ron carter on bass, tony williams on drums and wynton marsalis on trumpet for a $1. it’s in perfect shape, pretty good, and i’ve not seen it on disc. i wouldn’t mind having mp3’s of it.

  10. on more thing, matt, i was willing to live with one missing track on zappa-cowtown palace, kc, mo 12.2.72 then bigo e-mailed me and said they omitted the wrong track so i was able to get kc blues. now i have the complete both zappa sets. life is good. now that show really rules cause i’d meet mary halvorson again 38 years later to the day in tuscaloosa, al. she and carla kihlstedt are my two favorite people in the whole world. check both out. i have 40 something carla albums, boots, autographs, postcards she sent me with notes, sleepytime gorilla museum shirt and mary i have 16 cd’s, one mp3 album and a stack of shows! i made her a list once, and it was long.

  11. on more thing, matt, i was willing to live with one missing track on zappa-cowtown ballroom, kc, mo 12.2.72 then bigo e-mailed me and said they omitted the wrong track so i was able to get kc blues. now i have the complete both zappa sets. life is good. now that show really rules cause i’d meet mary halvorson again 38 years later to the day in tuscaloosa, al. she and carla kihlstedt are my two favorite people in the whole world. check both out. i have 40 something carla albums, boots, autographs, postcards she sent me with notes, sleepytime gorilla museum shirt and mary i have 16 cd’s, one mp3 album and a stack of shows! i made her a list once, and it was long.

  13. ed have you ever thought of converting your lps.cassettes, etc to mp3s? This is next on my wish list.I see blogs that offer music I’m looking for everywhere and use winrar to dl them. What I’d really like to do is start my own blog and do just that.I have about 30,000 lps alone and would love to convert them-Dak.com has a package that comes with a turntable and much more. You can also use captaincrawl and find blogs that way that may have what you’re looking for.

I will look into mary haverson-I have heard of her and prolly have something by her on my hard drive!

    By matt_the_cat on Aug 23, 2011

  14. yeah matt, i have, but i don’t know how. my brother does it with a program called audacity. it came with this turntable he bought. it works good, but it’s time consuming. he converted his bowie lps and others albums. i have an ultra rare and one of the best avant jazz albums ever called the gardens of harlem by clifford thornton on tape. i’d love to have mp3’s of it. i have a bunch of bootlegs on tapes too.

i definitely frequent the blogs for old thrash albums and demos. i have lots of obscure thrash albums that are lp rips. i love it. probably the jazz and johnny cash lp rips out there aren’t great quality. maybe some are. they’re are some out there who took care of their lp’s like i did growing up. i still have a mint copy of metallica-master of puppets on lp. i have a clear vinyl copy of lenny kravitz-are you gonna go my way? not sure what’s it worth, but i bought it cause it had the 8 song unreleased bonus disc. i like his old stuff. the first four albums is what i like. be nice if bigo posted a show from any of those tours.

    thanks matt.

  15. Hey Ed, Google search “Clifford Thornton Gardens Harlem rar” The third listing down is from Filetram and contains the download in a zip file. Download the file, then open it. It has the music plus sleeve artwork included. Hope this works for you………

By John Branin on Aug 23, 2011

  16. yeah john, i thought of that cause that’s how i found whiplash-fire away demo. do you know if the rips are good? my tape is worn out. it’s a great album. some albums you just don’t get sick of. check it out. clifford played with sun ra. he’s on art forms of dimensions tomorrow/cosmic tones for mental thearapy. i have it. i have ketchaoua by thornton. it’s heavy.
