Introduced as the next Elvis, Isaak’s trademark trembly croon remained his best asset.

Live At Bimbo’s 1995 [no label, 1CD]

Record company party live at Bimbo’s 365 Club, San Francisco, CA, USA, June 29, 1995. Ex soundboard stereo. This may have been offered as a promo for radio airplay. To our knowledge never officially released.

“I know I could have just kept doing music, kept making records and touring probably for the rest of my life, but what’s really fun is to try something different.”

Chris Isaak said that in 2001 about his then reality series, The Chris Isaak Show. By that time Isaak had put out six albums and was famous by association. His songs were used in hit Hollywood movies from David Lynch, Tony Scott to Stanley Kubrick and his videos were shot by superstar lensmen, Lynch and Herb Ritts.

This concert at Bimbo’s was recorded by his then label Warner Brothers and used to promote the album Forever Blue. Half of the songs from this show are from Forever Blue as well as his best known tune, Wicked Game. A song about a difficult relationship that could also be interpreted as Isaak and his muse. Was he just a singer in a rock ‘n’ roll band?

Isaak has never stood still. By the ’90s, he was already starring in minor roles in Hollywood movies like The Little Buddha, The Silence Of The Lambs, Twin Peaks and several others. Then in 2001, he took the chance to star in his own reality TV show. This may have affected his recording output. During this period up till 2004 when the series ended, Isaak put out only two albums, one of which was the festive “Christmas” disc.

It’s indeed a wicked game. Isaak remains on the border of stardom. Not remembered as a movie star and still to achieve superstar success in music.

Chris Isaak continues to tour and his voice remains his greatest gift, very emotive and powerful as this concert displays. Beyond The Sun, his latest album of Sun Records covers, shows off his tremulous voice to effect. He’s still got a long road ahead and hopefully more albums of all-original material. Meanwhile, enjoy this show of a rocker in full flight at the peak of his game.

The Chris Isaak Show ran from 2001 to 2004 with 47 episodes.
