New York 2011 [no label, 2CD]

Live at the Webster Hall, New York; September 8, 2011. Excellent France Inter FM broadcast. Full broadcast but not the complete show.

Like the elder stateswoman of rock that she is, Patti Smith has always something pertinent to say, apart from her songs, whenever she gets up on stage. For this show, Smith also had September 11 in mind. She said:

“In the last 10 years, what have we done to make a better world? We have created Guantanamo Bay Prison, we have incarcerated John Walker Lindh as a scapegoat, we have legally and morally invaded Iraq, caused the death of thousands of Iraqi citizens, and the death of thousands of young American soldiers. We have escalated in Afghanistan, we are now in Libya. I had great hopes on September 12 that we would find a way to communicate and rebuild our world but I think we haven’t done a very good job. But there is always tomorrow.”

At, G added: “She performed a cover of the Rolling Stones’ Play With Fire and afterwards she talked about her recent live cover of Adele’s Rolling In The Deep. She said that unfortunately, she mangled the song, but she fully expects a boxset of all the covers she’s destroyed over the years to be released. She asked if they can wait until after her death for such a collection. The entire show was amazing, but obviously the audience went nuts when she played Because The Night, Free Money and Pissing In A River, which she dedicated to Amy Winehouse.”

  10. The back cover refers to the show being Thursday 9/9, not 9/8. Of course, Thursday was the 8th, and that is the correct day of the show (she did not play Friday the 9th).
