Road Of Plenty: The Unreleased Songs (1966-2010 & Live Rarities 1969-1984) [The Godfather Box, 6CD]

Live and some studio tracks from various venues and dates. Released June 30, 2011. VG to Excellent stereo/mono. Boxset comes with a 44-page booklet.

We do not have the six months it took the folks at Godfather Records to plan, locate and assemble and manufacture the Road Of Plenty boxset to write this review. So we’ll just give you the highlights of this box.

Alert: The first track on CD1 is not sung by Neil. This song, I’ll Wait Forever, is by one of Young’s earliest bands, The Mynah Birds, with vocal duties handled by the late Rick James, of “Super Freak” fame.

CD1 The good songs are many on this disc. Hawaiian Sunrise, Love Art Blues, Traces, Try, Separate Ways, GIve Me Strength and No One Seems To Know all deserve release. However, most of the songs here have all appeared on one bootleg or fan compilation.

CD2 Some familiar lost songs, some never heard before, for example, Windward Passage, Turbine, Johnny, Love Hotel and Rock Rock Rock. Berlin has only been issued on an out-of-print laser disc. I Wonder Why and If You Got Love have appeared before. So Tired from 1984 has “grunge-like” chords pre-dating grunge. Some of the lost songs are not indispensable as the ones on CD1 are.

CD3 This disc contains a few of the songs rejected by Geffen as “not sounding like Neil Young”. Very countrified tracks like Hillbilly Band, Time Off For Good Behaviour and Your Love Again all left off Old Ways, the album. Leavin’ The Top 40 Behind is a bona fide hit. This boxset’s title, Road Of Plenty, the song, can be found here. It’s an early version of El Dorado. The rest are live songs with his Blue Notes band, Neil Young with brass.

CD4 Test your patience with Neil’s 18-plus-minute-song, Sixty To Zero. It’s a rambling, acoustic number. Then some leftovers from Crazy Horse sessions over the years, performed live. The final five songs are from performances since 2008. All sounding thoughtful which is where Young is at the present.

CD5 and CD6 The unusual live songs, mostly on CD6, are cut and pasted together to make a “live experience”. Unfortunately, there’s a bit of tape flutter and wobble that makes the listening experience unsatisfactory, for example, Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere, Birds.

The overall sound quality as Godfather themselves attest “were culled from the highest quality recordings”. We only want to add that it’s a bit “loud” after the remaster. The old Neil Young bootleg set, Rock ‘n’ Roll Cowboy, seems natural and organic next to this Monsanto-bred baby.

The Godfather set arrives years after fans have circulated their own compilation boxsets for free. You can still find them on the net. Neil Young Rarities from the folks at Neil Young Tree back in 1998, Archives Be Damned from 2000, the 10-disc A Perfect Echo from 2001, 5 Times Or Less Live and Peter Murphy’s Acoustic Rarities, all four or five disc sets.

Unlike the others, when available, Road Of Plenty sold for US$135. Neil might want to consider doing “an Arab spring cleaning” of his archive, eh?

  5. theres this channel i discovered that i had 6 months after i had it called palladia. its 24/7 concerts and similar live music performance films etc. sometimes its stuff from cmt and mtv and vh1 and old films from the 60s and 70s etc. its a music fans dream come true. today theyre showing an hour edit of the new black country communion live from europe dvd which theyve been showing all week long and theyll be showing 6 more times over the next month. but i digress.
they have a neil young tribute concert they show quite often also. in fact i am checking now and it will repeat at 730pm eastern time on thurs its 90mins and includes elton john elvis costello csn james taylor sheryl crow norah jones lady antebellum dave matthews ben harper keith urban and josh groban. its called musicares tribute to neil young. i dont know when it was recorded. immediately after this is neils heart of gold jonathan demme film from 06. the ryman aud concert from nashville tn. its 2 hours. i figure yall have seen this but maybe some havent or dont have it and might want to know etc. time warner offers the palladia channel. i had to get the box without upgrading in order to keep watching a channel that they were making available only to people who had the box. a year later they said theyd start charging me $8 a month for it. thats ok. this channel is worth 5x that much to me. not that i have any money mind u. haha.
but because i got the box i got the palladia channel. and one day months after i got the box i happened upon the channel and ive barely changed it since.
speaking of which–the last ever genesis concert in europe is on twice this week. rome italy. its only 2 hours so its not complete but its a very good show. even if it is phil singing. woulda been so nice that even tho peter didnt join them for that last tour.. hackett coulda joined them and made it incredible for some of us. sigh.
btw.. thanks for this neil collection. i cant wait til we have all 6 cds. how about a zappa multi cd collection like this?

  7. I enjoy these Neil collections. This one even has The Mynah Birds! I’ve managed to find a 2 cd set of The Ducks whom I never knew had been recorded.(The Ducks were Neil & Bob Mosley from Moby Grape and 2 other guys - They played bars around Santa Cruz in 1977). But I have yet to find a mp3 of the Hey Hey My My played by Neil Young & Devo from the film Human Highway (1982) with Booji Boy singing and Neil shredding his guitar. Very intense. I can hope it shows up on this comp. But if not, maybe someone out there can help steer me to it.

Thanks for all you do BigO.

  18. Neil Young, and no end! Great everything that Neil still unused deposited in the archives. Previously unknown to me are the takes of The Mynah Birds. Unfortunately, there are some missing (It’s My Time, Masquerade, Fantasy, I’ve Got You In My Soul, Go On And Cry …?. I suspect total of 16 songs.
Maybe you can still bring it!?
