KCRW 2011 [no label, 1CD]

Live on Morning Becomes Eclectic, KCRW, Santa Monica, CA; October 18, 2011. Excellent web stream.

When Malaysian singer-songwriter Zee Avi put up her video for No Christmas For Me on YouTube in 2007, the song attracted enough attention to get her signed to Jack Johnson’s Brushfire Records. Her self-titled debut album was released in 2009. On August 23, 2011, Zee released her follow-up album, Ghostbird.

Apart from gigging in the US to promote her new album, Zee has also managed to secure shows in Tokyo, Seoul, Taiwan, Indonesia and Malaysia for a November 2011 tour. And on December 3 at the Orpheum Theater in Los Angeles, Zee will be joining Iron And Wine, Anna Cali, The Belle Brigade and The Secret Sisters for KCRW’s Eclectic Holiday Show.

For those who haven’t heard Zee, this October KCRW programme is a good introduction to the artiste - with her chilled-out, jazzy, ukulele-based songs - who has critics comparing her to Cat Power.

Unlike musicians in $ingapore, Zee Avi is not a state-sponsored musician. Malaysia Boleh!

  3. Never heard of her either - but from the one song I did hear, she’s worth the download. So thx a lot for something new to broaden my horizon….Asia is certainly not where we usually look for singer-songwriters
