HOLE
Toronto 2010 [no label, 1CD]

Live at the Sound Academy, Toronto, ON, Canada; July 10, 2010. Very good to excellent soundboard.

While Courtney Love already had a band, Hole, before she married Kurt Cobain in 1992, being seen as Kurt’s spouse was already tough on any woman, and especially after Kurt’s suicide in 1994. (No doubt some Nirvana and Cobain diehards still see her as the ‘bitch from hell’, probably muttered in the same breath as Yoko Ono.)

In spite of the drugs and her tough lifestyle, Love has survived - sure her voice a a bit raspy on this 2010 Toronto show - and in 2010, Hole released their fourth studio album, Nobody’s Daughter. Their previous album was 1998’s Celebrity Skin. Then again, anyone with tracks such as Letter To God and Never Go Hungry wouldn’t go down without a fight. (Maybe Lindsay Lohan might do no worse than to have a chat with Love and Amy Winehouse could have benefitted from such a chat.)

As can be heard from this show, Love is slowly easing into her role as an elder stateswoman of grunge. Upon hearing audience requests, she says, “I’m not playing Teenage Whore. I turned 46 yesterday… No Teenage Whore… no getting the tits out…” but typical of her show, she gets bras thrown onto the stage. Before Celebrity Skin, looking at the response, she says: “That’s a lot of bras… that’s more bras than Nashville!”

Going by this show, Hole are far from bottoming out. And they can still whip up a storm.

Thanks to Lincoln Park Mark for sharing the tracks.

  3. never have been a fan, bigo. i’m always interested in nirvana shows, though. i got all the ones you offered except del mar, ca cause it’s missing tracks. i have it on tape, though. never have seen the b’ham, al nirvana show i saw in dec 1?. 93(’d have to look at my ticket stub) at boutwell auditorium with the breeders. if you ever see it lincoln park mark, post it. the set was similar with the rome, italy 2.22.94 show. i can use that one too. i gave my tape to jessica pavone last year.

as far as gnr, if you have any old shows from appetite for destruction, that’d be good. i already have their ritz 87 show. i found it three years ago, and i have a dvd of it from my old vhs taped off mtv i kept high school.

    alice cooper is always good.

  4. Oh my goodness…Courtney not doing ‘Teenage Whore’ anymore?Elder stateswoman of grunge? Do we really need one? And shouldn’t that be states Person?
She’s a survivor? Like someone who lived through Auschwitz or someone who beat cancer?
She rode Kurt’s coattails into the bigtime and has had so much smoke blown up her piehole…it is to laugh…

  11. thanks for this one, BigO. I saw Courtney on this tour as well and loved it. I didn’t feel like I was seeing Hole; it’s definitely the Courtney Love show at this point, but she was in good form.

After the show, I wondered why she hadn’t gone back to the first album for anything, particularly “Teenage Whore.” I guess I’ve got my answer.

  16. I saw Hole on their stop in Miami on this tour. I’m a fan, but by this point it was the Courtney Love show, more so than Hole. I enjoyed the show, but it wasn’t quite the same as having seen them a few years earlier.
