Boston 1974 [no label, 2CD]

Live at the Boston Music Hall, Boston, MA; October 13-14, 1974. Good to very good audience recording.

Kansas’s self-titled debut album was recorded in 1973 and it was only released in March 1974. Yet while they were promoting the album, they were already previewing Song For America, from their second album.

The group’s mix of prog rock and barroom boogie might have been seen initially as a novelty and even put down by critics: “Kansas’s ornate and complex rock has  been dismissed by critics as a pastiche of early-’70s British progressive rock…” But hard work, touring and promotion did pay off, making the band a fan favourite, especially in the Midwest.

Thanks to the person who shared these tracks on the net in 2006.

Seeder’s notes to Disc 1: “Another great quality tape from Steve Hopkins, one of the most legendary Boston Tapers of the day. This is very clean and clear… Song For America would only be released in 1975.”

Seeder’s notes to Disc 2: “This recording is not as good as the first night - slightly distorted and muddy in some places… It is very clear that they feel much more at east tonight… Overall, a great early recording.”

  13. I saw them open for Little Feat in Cambridge in 1973 in a small club (The Performance Center), and they sucked. Pointless music time does not improve.

  17. Tracks 103 and 203 come up as HTM pages rather than mp3 files, and I hope this can be fixed. Thanks anyway, for the fine music that I have found on this site.
