YOUN SUN NAH & ULF WAKENIUS
Billancourt, France 2011 [no label, 1CD]

Live at Carré Belle Feuille de Boulogne Billancourt, France, October 13, 2011. Ex FM stereo.

“At Youn Sun Nah’s 2009 debut in Munich’s Unterfahrt jazz club, the audience went against tradition and arose for a standing ovation during the interval, not even waiting for the concert to finish. Germany’s Süddeutsche Zeitung called her the ‘discovery of the season’ and wrote, ‘there has not been something so brilliant, interesting and virtuosic in jazz singing for a long time’. She won the Audience Prize in the BMW Welt Jazz Awards as well as the hearts of Germany’s jazz fans on her extensive JazzToday tour. Rarely has a singer taken Germany so by storm as the Korean artist Youn Sun Nah has with her ACT debut Voyage.” (from londonkoreanlinks.com)

Youn Sun Nah is back with Ulf Wakenius to promote their latest album, Same Girl. Don’t expect Norah Jones. Sun Nah has a habit of scatting and yodelling, stretching her vocals to the limits. Ulf seems to like this, following her every twist and turn with equal dexterity on his guitars, acoustic or electric.

Ulf is no backing guitarist but a virtuoso as this performance displays convincingly.

Sun Nah is from a musical South Korean family. Her father is an orchestra conductor, her mother a singer. She started in classical music but since her move to Paris in 1995, has focused her talent on jazz singing. Cleverly, Sun Nah offers an assortment of covers from Sting, Tom Waits, Metallica to Randy Newman. His Same Girl is the title of her latest album.

Ulf is a Swedish guitarist and former member of the Oscar Peterson quartet from 1997. He was also a member of the Ray Brown trio and has solo albums to his credit.

Together with Sun Nah, the pair are hot not only in France, but in time to the rest of the world. The Tom Waits cover (Jockey Full Of Bourbon) gets a mournful take like a death lament, tracks like Egberto Gismonti’s Frevo is given a full on vocal cover with Sun Nah scatting, Metallica’s Enter Sandman… doesn’t sound like Metallica. Sacrilege? Nah, just unconventional. Then listen to the final track, Sun Nah solo, singing Randy Newman’s Same Girl with just a kalimba[?] for accompaniment.

That’s confidence. A star is born.
