GRAHAM PARKER
Rome 2000 [no label, 1CD]

Live at Big Mama, Rome, Italy; April 4, 2000. Excellent soundboard (radio broadcast?).

To some, singer-songwriter Graham Parker might be an acquired taste and, for some others, he’s considered under-appreciated and even one of “rock’s best kept secrets”. And anyone who can line up Discovering Japan, Local Girls, Nobody Hurts You and You Can’t Be Too Strong (the first four tracks of Side One of the Squeezing Out Sparks (1979) album) certainly deserves listeners’ attention.

And fans used to hearing Parker rock out in a group setting will enjoy this solo, stripped-down set.

Thanks to raytobe for sharing the tracks on the net in 2004. Thanks also to dogegio for the artwork.

  2. Wow! Great GP acoustic set from Rome…thank you very much.

Here is a song title correction, if I may.

Track 14 is called “Obsessed With Aretha” from Graham’s 1996 CD “Acid Bubblegum”

  5. He can stand his parker’s guitar shuffle like a
    gypsy,but don’t ask him about it,he don’t know!
Too bad he don’t sing “you can’t take love for
granted” or any from the album “steady nerves”.
Thanks for the gift BigO :)

  7. If this is your first time hearing Mr Parker, try to locate the album ‘Heat Treatment’. When I first heard it many, many years ago, it reminded me of a British Springsteen (but way better).

  8. It’s difficult to understand why Graham Parker was not bigger than Elvis Costello … he writes better songs and sings them brilliantly. A solo set … simply wonderful. Thanks for sharing.

  9. Ps … as well as taking this, I have to add that I HAVE BOUGHT 99% of Graham’s official albums … don’t listen to them half as much as I should because ol’ Bob gets preference.

  10. I saw Graham solo a couple of years ago on Long Island and was amazed at how well most of his back catalog has aged. I usually don’t like the ‘unplugged’ versions of serious rockers, but Graham is an exception. Thanks for the posting. PS-if you get a chance go see Tab Benoit in a club. Saw a recent show at the Rhythm Room in PHX and was blown away! Any Benoit posting?

  11. Been a fan for years. Finally was able to catch him live last year. Great show start to finish. Squeezing Out Sparks is a great album, but there are so many others that rate quite highly. A true hidden talent to most of the rock world. Such a shame, he deserves so much more. Thanks for the post.
