TODD RUNDGREN
with The Metropole Orkest
conductor Steve Sidwell
Amsterdam 2011 [no label, 2CD]

Live at the Paradiso, Amsterdam, The Netherlands; September 24, 2011. Broadcast on January 1, 2012. Excellent Radio 6 Netherlands Web Broadcast.

In January 2011, a reunion of most of the members of the 1974 Utopia personnel (Todd Rundgren, Moogy Klingman, Ralph Shuckett, John Siegler, and Kevin Ellman) was held for two nights in New York City, with proceeds to defray medical treatment for Klingman who was battling with cancer. The Wikipedia reported that both shows sold out in just three days which may have influenced the idea for a full tour that took place in November 2011 as “Todd Rundgren’s Utopia”. The original plan for the tour included Klingman but his health condition worsened during rehearsals and he died before the 12-concert tour was finished. Klingman died on November 15; he was 61.

But in September 2011, after touring the US and Japan, Rundgren played one show in Amsterdam. And going by the response of the crowd, it was one heck of a party. Thanks to mrtapes who recorded the internet broadcast and shared the tracks on Demonoid.

  9. I went to see Todd on News Years Eve 1975. He was to perform between Beefheart’s set and Zappa’s. Only Todd didn’t show up that night so I didn’t really get to see him.

  10. For those of you wanting to hear the Arena tour, buy the album. That’s what it sounded like. ;)

Signed, saw two shows on the tour, the first and the last. Not Todd’s greatest moment imo.

This performance from Big O, on the other hand…superb!

  11. Skiing! I also attended that New Years concert at the L.A. Forum. I was so looking forward to hearing the material from “Initiation” done live, and was very disappointed when Todd cancelled. The substitute, as I recall, was Dr. John - good, but not quite what I needed at the time. One thing I remember from the show was that Beefheart had no bass in the band - instead he had a bass trombone (one of the Fowler brothers, I think)! Unusual, but it sounded great. I have a theater-card-size ad for the concert framed on my wall.

  14. could somebody remove that way too obvious advert for JalImpaler’s youtube site? nobody cares, you spamming moron.

By ShutUp on Jan 19, 2012

  15. ShutUp-

I don’t make money off the YouTube. I happen to want to share some videos of artist performance that I took while attending their concerts. That is all. Your comment is rude and shows extreme ignorance. I merely am thankful for everyone who shares on sites like BigO and want to give back. Thus, my comment is not Spam. Thanks for your deep concern in monitoring this site.

  18. Awesome hearing these songs again. Bag Lady in particular always sends chills down my spine, maybe because I’m from in NYC and they are no longer anywhere to be found. Where did they all go?? A total 70’s invention along w Son of Sam! And Ralph Shuckett, the original keyboardist with Clear Light! A museum piece! Thanks

  19. Thanks for sharing some Todd. Looks like a great show. Can you share any of the recent AWAITS,Healing & Todd shows?

By Matt on Jan 31, 2012

  20. Wow, dude. That is off the hook. Simply loved it. My favorite artist, bar none. The large orchestral settings make these songs that were already stupendous that much more wonderful. I am so grateful for the high fidelity as well. Great job.

  21. For me one song will always define Todd R., Utopia, first heard in the early 70s on transistor radio, after midnight on Beaker Street, KAAY Little Rock. The crescendo to the guitar climax will live forever in my memory, “Yes, this is what music is about.” I could write a monologue about hot dry country winds blowing through the single bedroom window in the second story of a century-old rural frame house, but deadline howls.
    Be well Big O amigos.
