Buffalo 1984 [no label, 2CD]

Live at the Salty Dog Saloon, Buffalo, NY; July 15, 1984. Good to very good audience recording.

R.E.M. might have disbanded in September 2011 but roots rock fans will continue to tap their feet to the group’s jingle jangle and chiming guitars. Many see 1987’s Document as the group’s breakthrough album but it was likely 1991’s Out Of Time, with hits such as Losing My Religion and Shiny Happy People, that made R.E.M. a huge band.

The group’s Chronic Town EP (1982) and the debut album Murmur (1983) made them cult favourites and Reckoning probably succeeded in helping to capture R.E.M.’s live feel in the studio.

Ira Robbins wrote in The Trouser Press Guide To ’90s Rock:

R.E.M. didn’t reinvent the wheel or demolish any stylistic barriers when the quartet popped its curly little head up from the collegiate fields of Athens, Georgia, at the beginning of the 1980s; the power-pop underground already had other Byrdsian bands with jangly guitars and mumbly singers. Of course, no other band had a mumbly singer with the potent artistic vision or charisma of Michael Stipe, or the unique brains/brawn extrovert/introvert art/rock chemistry of R.E.M. - two of the reasons by the group rose steadily through an uneven series of ’80s albums to stand as one of the world’s biggest and best-loved rock ‘n’ roll combos.

And this gig was still early days…

Thanks to Martine Holl for sharing the tracks at Dime.

Thanks also to: taper John (according to evr at Dime); leedsukmale (ticket stub) and gothic-addiction.blogspot (cover picture).

Martine noted: This is a pretty good AUD recording from the Reckoning Tour. According to the [R.E.M.] Timeline, it is missing most of the second encore, Batman Theme should merge into Second Guessing / Ghost Riders In The Sky / Carnival Of Sorts (Boxcars). This show has an incredibly fun middle part of the set, consisting solely of cover tracks… I envy those of you who were old and smart enough (and local) to be there!

Note from the Timeline: About a minute of the Dream Syndicate song ‘Medicine Show’ was played between Driver 8 and Sitting Still. Michael says thanks to the band for opening up and says that he does a great Steve Wynn (for money!) and that Steve Wynn does a pretty good Michael.

  3. I don’t remember it well, but I was there. It was a weird place above a department store or something, I think. X played a great show at that venue as well with the Del Fuegos. I guess I’ll give this a listen. Thanks.

  5. Steve Wynn has a great anecdote about this show that’s recounted in Denise Sullivan’s book “Talk About the Passion.” Wynn misremembers it as being a set that was nothing but covers, but there were certainly enough covers played to piss off some people in the audience. They confronted Wynn after the show about R.E.M. “ripping them off.” I guess they figured Wynn could get ‘em their money back…?

  7. I was there. Does anyone else who was there remember how big the crowd was? I remember it being very small — like 100 people or something.

  8. I remember there being an underage area and an over 18 area separated by a rope (I think the drinking age was still 18) and it was small, but more than 100. michael stipe was wearing a blue dress…he and peter buck did a lot of rolling around onstage. natalie merchant was there-in the crowd

  10. Hi, I use to work at The Salty Dog Saloon, was at this show and run the nostalgic FB page for the club. I should have purchased this CD when I seen it available many years ago because now it seems to be non-existent! If anyone has this CD or songs downloaded, please allow me to purchase a copy from you so I can make the songs available to people on the club page. Thank you in advance for your help and consideration!
