Studio Jam 2012

Redwood Digital, Broken Arrow Ranch, Woodside, CA; January 2012. Streamed from Neil Young’s website.

On January 22, 2012, the following note was posted at

Neil Young has been recording with Crazy Horse. One album is complete and they are working on another.

This is the first time Neil Young has worked with the band since 2004. In 2008, Young was asked if he had any desire to work with Crazy Horse again and he said: “I’m not thinking about that right now. We’ll just see what happens. Something might happen. You never know. Or something else we don’t even know about could happen, and that would be really good, rather than go back. But if the vibe’s right to go back and grab what’s back there and yank it into the future, that’s a big job.”

On January 28, a 37-minute Neil Young jam session was streamed on Neil Young’s site. You can still listen to the track here.

Thanks to zoso58 and nadiar who split the track and shared them on the net. (Ideal for those who want to carry the tracks around but do not have the tools to capture the audio stream.)

Picture by Per Ole Hagen - thanks!

Thanks to Erik for the artwork.

  2. “It doesn’t affect me because I look at the internet as the new radio. I look at the radio as gone. […] Piracy is the new radio. That’s how music gets around. […] That’s the radio. If you really want to hear it, let’s make it available, let them hear it, let them hear the 95 percent of it.”

Neil Young said that at the recent Dive Into Media conference, Jan 31, 2012.

  3. Back when FM Radio was new, we had WBCN, which was called underground radio. This reminds me of that. Hope it gets straighttened out. Have a nice day. Jimg

  4. While i agree to certain extent with Neil`s thoughts re the radio and piracy it still might be a lot easier to be complacent once you have “made it” than it is for struggling young musicians who don`t know where the next meal comes from.

  5. Thank you Big O Amigos, for this and the REM. Time for another Thompson Jam, while I am sunset grilling in the rain for a sick friend this weekend.

    Be well.

  6. True sluggo. Neil doesn’t worry too much about cash these days.

By jbbmusic on Feb 4, 2012

  7. Yeah…I respect Neil Young as much as any musician who ever walked this earth, but nonetheless piracy is piracy and I think it’s easier for someone who probably has many millions in the bank and is near the end of his career to okay it than it is musicians who scramble for a living. As far as making available live recordings, I really don’t have much problem with people posting that sort of stuff if there will never be any intention on the artist’s part of trying to sell it.

  10. The inherent problem in Neil’s solution (Occupy Audio) is that, were labels to adopt this level of standard in audio releases, they would then have no option to release a better audio quality version later on, probably in a newer format, & charge consumers to buy the same product again just for the improvement. That is, Go Neil!

  11. i loved these 2 tracks to death. i could listen to shit like this all day long. i dont care who it is. neil or anyone else that does stuff like this. jams like this for me is what makes it worthwhile. u can listen to this 20x and not know that u have ever heard it before. this reminds me of those long improvised jam sessions from the late 60s early 70s from sf that i miss terribly. if u can post more of this stuff along the lines like this… ill be in sonic heaven. thank u.

  12. I’m with you on that Darth. I was about to burn these to a disc with the first four Doors songs just for the psychedelic of it but the BigO posted more Doors. So if they are cleaning out the closet on Doors I’ll just wait and see what happens next. But this got me in the mood, and not that anyone cares, but todays playlist was everything from Country Joe & the Fish to Gary Duncan & the Crawfish of Love.

  13. Typical Neil, always throwing curve balls at his audience AND detractors to keep everyone on their toes.I just happened to be checking his site the morning this was posted and I have to say that is made my entire day.His work with Crazy Horse is my favorite so having this to listen to and to have as a reference point as to what is coming up leaves me shivering with anticipation.I am eternally grateful..thx again Big O !!!

  14. I couldn’t care less what Neil said. This is some of the best N & CH I’ve ever heard, and that’s saying something. Wow.

  15. Darth and Sking, you should prob’ly check this out if you don’t have already:
A little rough around the edges, but the band seriously cooks!

  16. yes the smbb gig rocks. its an aud recording but its killer. with boz no less. all the early smbb gigs are killer. anything he did pre 73 was amazing. i actually walked out of a steve miller show in 88 when he recorded the king biscuit flower hour show in nyc at the beacon theatre. it was god awful. i was in the 12th row and i felt like he really didnt want to be there. i later listened to it on the radio and knew that it was totally faked. the audience was not the actual audience that was at the show at all. it was fake audience filler. totally bogus. i was ashamed that kbfh did that.
btw.. if anyone cant quite figure out the above link that golgo posted try this–

but dont miss the 68 item there which is a sbd from sf or the 72 fm brdcst or the 67 sbd or the 69 fm while youre at it.

and sking–on that site there are so many f’ing items that rock our worlds that i cant even start. theres a crazy nrps item that he just posted this week. my only complaint is that the links he uses never work for me. took me 2 weeks to get one dvd to finally work.

theres a smb dvd there too which includes some very early crap thats worth having.

By darth on Feb 9, 2012

  17. Thanks golgo for the link. Lotsa good stuff. I bookmarked it for future shopping. I found the Moby Grape that I missed at 24hr deja vu when the megawall came down.
Darth-I’ve never downloaded a dvd as I share a router with two others and must learn to play well with others- but if you go back to TUBE and check the Canned Heat list they have a dvd of a festival in Holland 1970 w/the Heat, the Airplane,Santana,Beautiful Day,Pink Floyd, T Rex and others.
PS-some of those links are just overcrowded and may drop you even when you finally get there.

  18. I listened to this on Neil’s site and really dug the Cortez take. Thanks for making it available.

  24. Officially released on the Psychedelic Pill Blu-Ray…

  25. ill never own a bluray player. i sure as hell wouldnt go to the trouble of buying a bluray cd to get these bonus tracks if they are only available that way. i had to go thru a hell of a lot of effort to find the japanese exclusive tracks for this album. there were a bunch of obscure tracks that were bonus tracks for this album in various formats. i enjoyed tracking them down as i do with all the artists that i like when they do that. it took me over a year to find the 4th bonus track for claptons clapton album a couple of years back. the first 3 were no problem. but that last one was impossible. then once i found it.. it was all over the place.. i was so frustrated.
back when joshua tree came out i was running all over the city looking for all the non lp b sides and 12 inch singles and rarities that went along with that album. i wasnt interested in waiting 10 or more yrs for the dble cd to get released so i could just get it all at once. and who knows if they will do that when u are into a band or artist anyway?
i love the searching i just dont like coming up empty. thankfully we have the info now with the internet. back in the 70s and 80s even early 90s this info wasnt that easy to find.
