THE '60s

The Konrads [no Bowie]- 1965? Rehearsals [no label 1CD mindwarp 534]cover art is wrongly labelled 1963. "There are some doubts whether this is from 1963 and is from 1965 and consequently would not feature Bowie (Jones). According to Ruud Altenburg's fine discography website David Bowie "Baby It's Too Late Now: released as a single (CBS 201812) by Bowie's former group The Konrads in 1965, backed by 'I'm Over You'. A second single (Decca 32060), 'I Didn't Know How Much' b/w 'I Thought Of You Last Night', was released in Canada in the same year. In 2003, much to everyone's surprise a Konrads rehearsal tape was said to have found its way into the collector's circuit. Not long after, the bootleg Ziggy Final Farewell 1973 (Rattle Snake RS 313/32) appeared, containing seven songs supposedly recorded in 1963. According to the liner notes, these tracks were "The Konrads rehearsals, Bromley Scout Hut, South London, July-August 1963." The following titles are given to the seven tracks: The Better I Know/Now I'm On My Way/Baby It's Too Late/I'm Over You/Judgement Day/I Don't Know How Much/I Thought Of You Last Night. With the inclusion of four songs that were released in 1965, it is clear that these songs were recorded during a 1965 studio session without Bowie. "Another Bowie fan who uses the pseudonym clarkgwent on Mind-Warp Pavilion claims on 2 September 2007 that "I own the original recording of this and can tell y'all a little bit about it. It was all recorded in 1965 and none of it features Bowie. The original CD that was given to me by the session's engineer didn't include 'I Thought Of You Last Night'. I added that on from the 7" single. I only ever gave one copy of this to somebody, on the strict understanding that it shouldn't be copied. This at the request of the engineer that originally gave it to me. So much for that..." Ex- SBD stereo. TT 18.11mins.

But take note about what this fan "maarten" says: 'This gig was never broadcast on the radio, so there are no pre-FM or Fm recordings. As far as I know all recordings come from the same tape that was discovered in the early 90s. As far as I know the history of this on bootleg was that the first version was on bootleg vinyl (Strange Fascination). The first CD version, also called Strange Fascination was then taken from vinyl. (The Duke of LA is a copy of that version)

'A later CD version, confusingly also called Strange Fascination was then taken from the master (or at least not from the vinyl boot). This contains the 10 minute intro and better sound quality than the other versions. This version was then copied for a host of other bootleg CD's (Bowie 1974, Wealth and Authority and A Portrait In Flesh)'. Ex SBD stereo. DATA FILE ONLY.

Jackson Browne - The Nina Demos [2CD]. Predating his demos for the first album, Browne wrote some undistinguished songs [just listen to his ode to Melissa] that aped styles instead of being inspired. Still, fans will want to hear these 30 songs that offer no hint of the talented singer-songwriter. Very good sound, a bit scratchy suggesting these are taken off demo records.

Jackson Browne - The Criterion Demos [1CD]. In the days of vinyl, there were lots of Jackson Browne bootlegs but by the time bootleg CDs arrived, Browne's appeal had faded, hence these releases found on the net are welcomed. The Criterion Demos have first takes of Jamaica Say You Will, Song For Adam, Doctor My Eyes, My Opening Farewell and lots more all in excellent quality. The unreleased track from the first album, Nightingale, is distinguished by exceptionally poor quality. Get this if you can.

Jackson Browne - The Young Pretender [1CD]. Subtitled "Jackson Browne's first known recorded performance", that should get you excited. Mostly songs from the first two albums, the show was recorded Mar 27 1971 at Syracuse University, in New York. Before singing the last song of the show, Looking Into You, an agitated Browne tells his audience to "shut the fuck up". An excellent solo show [Jackson switches from guitar to piano] in excellent sound.

Jackson Browne - The Main Point, Bryn Mawr, 1975 from JEMS Archives 2011 [no label 3CD dime 357133] live at The Main Point, Bryn Mawr, PA, Sept 7, 1975. "This was recorded as it was broadcast live on WMMR and completely commercial free with the only cut between Song For Adam and Cocaine due to a reel flip/change. Apparently WMMR thought the show was over after Runaway and the DJ did his outro comments and the station cut out to their regularly scheduled broadcast missing the final encore. The encore was broadcast on a simulcast/rebroadcast of this show and is included here from another tape source. The sound on this is excellent and Lindley's guitar work this night is absolutely sublime. This show was part of a six night benefit concert. The broadcast either due to the recording or receiver had a high pitched whine noise in it. This copy has been mastered to remove the whine out of the audio and the same whine was also present on the other audio source for the encore. That was also mastered the same way. This an absolutely essential must have show if you like Jackson Browne in the slightest." - weedwacker67. The master reel was transferred by JEMS. The taper is unknown. Ex FM stereo. Robin Gibb - Sing Slowly Sisters [Captain Acid 1CD] The 1970 Unreleased LP as mastered by Captain Acid in 2004. Originally recorded January to April 1970 in London. Sing Slowly Sisters was to have been Robin’s second solo album after Robin’s Reign. Most of the songs feature a large orchestra and many vocal overdubs. Very Special Day, Sky West and Crooked and Avalanche have backing vocal dubs but no orchestra. A group of three songs recorded together - I’ve Been Hurt, Irons In The Fire and Cold Be My Days - have no rhythm section at all and Robin varies the tempo as he sings to large orchestral arrangements. None of these songs has been released or recorded by other artists and only a few have been published. Four are lost and not in the RSO tape library. No tracklist was ever drawn up for this album. The 17 songs chosen here are at best a guess as to what would have been the final 12 tracks. This 2004 release retitles Janice found on other versions to You Are Still My Shining Star and adds Avalanche not found on other versions. Tk 2 of my copy has skips a 0.36 m and 0.52 m. "This is actually a very enjoyable recording and provides an example of the type of show the band known as Earth would have played and their transition into one of the most important bands in history, Black Sabbath! " - rehece6, Sept 2015. Taper: Alex Wilson. Lineage: Grundig Dynamic Mic -> Grundig Reel To Reel @ 3 and 3/4 IPS. "The show was recorded at the far stage from where the Sabs played, using one Grundig dynamic mic (thus making the tape just monaural). There was no automatic level setting on the mike then, so there are fluctuations in the recording level, as well as the inevitable bits of tape dropout considering the age of the tape originally used. During the music solos, you can hear the crowd chatting and discussing the evening, due to the obvious fact that they were standing between the mike and the band." - Alex Wilson. VG AUD mono.
