Ex SBD mono except for Tk 1 which is an audience recording. Tks 9-12 Studios of KGSR, Bastrop, TX March 17, 1995. Ex FM stereo. "In the interminable wait for Lucinda's breakthrough masterpiece, Car Wheels on a Gravel Road, she played annually at SXSW, debuting material that would eventually appear on the album as far back as 1994. In 1995, she took the stage fully convinced that the album was nearly done, though it would take almost three years and two additional production teams to finish the effort. But on this night, Lucinda, Gurf Morlix and the band, joined by Ian McLagan on keyboards, played seven songs from the as-yet-unreleased album; the following day, Lu and Gurf went to KGSR, played another three and talked about the record and the show the night before. For my money these performances, especially songs like "Car Wheels" that feature McLagan, are nothing short of brilliant and some of these have never sounded fresher or, arguably, better." Tks 5-14 Jan 12, 1975. "This is a truly fabulous and interesting collection of early Tom Waits radio shows that includes music and interviews during a period of about a year and half; around the time of his first couple of album releases. Fascinating because you can actually hear audibly the metamorphosis of Tom from a struggling musician into a star. His singing style change is remarkable and his growing confidence is obvious. The earliest stuff doesn't sound at all like the Tom we know and love. The change in his voice is amazing (smoking and drinking does take its toll, lol). Toms interviews are very interesting as he tells the background stories of the songs, kind of a pre-Storytellers thing." - syd. Ex FM stereo. DATA FILE ONLY

Tom Waits - The Black Rider Demos + Performances [no label 1CD Torrent: 95772] Tks 1-14 These are the tracks recorded by Waits and given to Germany's Thalia Theatre for their production of The Black Rider. Wonderfully raw and spirited, with many tracks that were never released on his cleaned-up album 'The Black Rider', this is a must-have for Waits fans. I think that most versions here are superior to the official release, in fact. 'Down the Reeperbahn' is totally over the top, and perhaps the gem on here. "This recording originally sounded absolutely horrible. Once the many speed corrections were done, I could start to see how it could be interesting, but the overabundance of midrange & muffling, etc, was a real drag. Since I find it unlikely there are even many hardcores who would willingly listen to the original without some help, I went ahead & worked on a EQ version that sounded good to me. It is still rough & crunchy, but if you  are into the band, likely you can wend your way thru with some enjoyment. At this point it sounds pretty much OK on my stereo."
